Hi, everyone...

Haven't been around here for a long time, but I just bought a neat litho
and was wondering if anyone might have some information about it. I
can't find much on the internet (yes, I did a Google search for all
terms). It's a picture of a sleeping baby who is being guarded by her
faithful pet pit bull. :-) It appears to be in the original frame, which
is damaged. I'm going to replace it because I think it's all wrong for
this art. Anyhow, a pic of it is here:
http://www.rag-time.com/dogs/artwork/PBandChildLitho.JPG

I have taken it out of the frame and the print is in pretty good shape
(needs a good dusting, though). There does not appear to be an artist
signature on it and there are no marks on the back. The only marks are
along the bottom margin, which were covered by the frame. In the lower
left corner, there is a very tiny diamond mark that says "Muller,
Luchsinger & Co. 1901 N.Y." In the center, it is identified as "No. 26 -
On Guard."

I saw a similar piece on eBay, but earlier. It was dated 1876, also
titled "On Guard" and the artist name is either C.E. or G. E. Gilman.
Would my piece be by the same artist? Who is he or she? I'd like to know
more about this piece and I really don't care "what it's worth." I just
like it. I'd like to collect more if they're out there, too.

BTW, if you want to see some cute pics of my pit bull "inspecting" the
print and then emulating it, take a look at the rest of the photos in
the file:
http://www.rag-time.com/dogs/artwork/

Thanks in advance for any info you may have.

RAGards,

Tracy

Hi!

You know, I shouldn't even take up space here.
I don't recall ever seening any sort of reference book
on those particular type things.

I've been out of the loop, so things are not fresh in
my mind (Well, OK, it COULD be those oxies I got from
my old buddy, Rush) --- but

(pardon, just got interrupeted by a trick or treater)

Oh good grief. I think I gave some of my oxies to
the trick or treater! Yikes.

No, wait. They are all here. Whew! No way I am
going to give a $35 oxie to some schmuck dressed up
like Barney, the most annoying Dinosaur of all time.

I was THIS close to being an urban legend.

;)

You saw this one, right?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3247175051

I might be wrong, but it seems odd that the same artist
would give the same title to two different works, unless
they were "On Guard - 1", "On Guard - 2", and so on
up to your "On Guard - 26".

Do some google work for Bessie Pease Gutmann and
her contemporaries.

Kris

Hi, Kris...

Yup! That would be the one. Almost bid on that, too - very cute.

Hard to tell if they would be the same artist or not. I just found it
odd that they were so similar in subject, but pit bulls in those days
were considered fine guardian dogs for children.

Will do - thanks!

Hiya, Marshall!

Great to see you again! Lessee... what I've been up to:

1.) Escaped California and moved back to Illiois. Took the itinerant
ragtimer with me.
2.) Still collecting sheet music, very old 78s and player piano rolls
and doing historical reasearch on American popular music.
3.) Raising and training dogs. I have four. Two are deaf. One's a pit
bull. I've become an activist of sorts for both deaf dogs and pit bulls.
4.) One of my deafies is now a certified Therapy Dog, so we're starting
to do the nursing home circuit.
5.) I'm learning Spanish, and trying to become fluent. I'm getting
pretty good at it these days, but a long way from fluency.
6.) I review a book every now and then on Amazon. My favorite is a pan -
check out the novel "The Tortilla Curtain" if you want do see how I reacted.

Is that enough? ;-) How 'bout you?

Well, Hi, there, sweet thing!

You missed me? Awww...

Well, how 'bout this - I'll stick around and help out whenever the
subject turns to sheet music, piano rolls, antique instruments and stuff
like that.

Are the AOLympics still an interesting diversion around here? Remember
my dissertation on the "Siler Dollar?" Heehee... I'm really proud of
that. It's the only fiction I've ever written well. :-)

I have missed you guys, too.

Still Raggin'...

Well, hiya there, Mike!

You know, you still hold the unique distinction of being the only person
to have seen that rare piano roll I've been looking for. I'm STILL
looking for it, would you believe? How goes things for you?

Great to see you again!
