I'm always there!

The dumbest thing is that the first season they taped a show in the next
town over from me. I didn't know. I would have been the first on line!
Not that I have anything really wonderful to show, but it's like
climbing Everest, you do it because it's there.

Well, I don't mean to beat a dead horse (though it IS fun)but , once
again tonight, I heard the phrase "with 'that' story" in referring to an
Blanket Chest in which some Gold was hidden in a secret compartment.
More and more,I am tempted to start embellishing my items with the
"True Story"...

Just curious Doug ..... the Antiques Roadshow, is this the American version
with American 'punters' and experts or the original Brit repeats.

Ronnie ask if the Antiques Roadshow is the 'Merkin' or British version..
Ronnie,
It is the merkin version with representatives from
Sothebys,Christies,Skinner, etc. auction houses handling long lines of
'hopeful' people that have brought grandma's collectibles....All the
current owners have their 'family stories' and dreams resting on the
appraisers final dollar amount. I can tell when an item is worth more
than I figured by the gleam in the appraisers eyes and the drool on
their chin.
The dollar value of my entire shop just tripled when I realized that
I was forgetting about 'the story' attached each of my 'unique
items'.... IMO
cheerio,

I taped it (for my son) and will answer questions unless I use the
tape for something else in the meantime. ;-)

Well, once again, I still say the appraisers SAY that to make the
owner feel good. The value is the value, regardless of story (but not
regardless of provenance).

Question regarding the "Antique Roadshow".

Is it really a "roadshow"?

How do we find out when and where it will be from time to time?

Thank you

Well the British version is very much staged managed. I believe that most
of the heavy stuff (high value) is pre-arranged. The Brit version has only
visited my region (N.I) on two or three occasions (for obvious reasons :) )
On those occasions I and including many of my colleagues have been
contacted beforehand, either by the local Christie's or Sotheby's reps to
enquire if we had anything we would think appropriate or something with a
good story or local historical provenance to place on the show.

In their first visit to N.I back in the late80s/early 90s (?) a friend of
mine that collects fine art took several of his paintings along. When he
got to the art expert (after several hours) the expert viewed all the
painting, picked one in particular, then ask my friend to hold-on, and
disappeared, somewheres, with the painting in question. The expert then
returned about half an hour later with the painting. After asking my friend
several questions regarding the painting, including, how much was
originally paid for it, then ask if they could start recording ...... enter
make-up, lights, camera, action .... did in the end value the painting at
25k and without doubt the director of the Roadshow got the desired reaction
from my friend. ;) Several years later the friend sold the said painting at
a Christie's specialist picture sale ..... for 10K less fees, less adverts,
less all the rest.

A total con job, IMO is the Antiques Roadshow, made for fireside antique
collectors and half-wits, but good for a laugh, certainly not to be taken
seriously or believed. Personally, I think these type of shows should go
out live or at least be recorded live ... that would separate the real
experts from the auction house bullshitters. :) .... but hey it's just TV

In the long run it must bring business to Christie's and Sothebys (and the
insurance companies) by far the "experts" used in the Brit version. :)

BTW ..... I wonder do the insurance companies (and Christie's and Sothebys)
tout the owners for business at a later date ... bet they do :)

BTW again .... the makers of the Brit Roadshow do a kids version, when
young kids (10-16 year old sometimes younger) bring in stuff they collect,
this is by far a better and honest show ..... no pretentious nonsense here
and most times the kids never bat an eye when told the value of their
stuff.

OK ..... back to the Roadshow ..... American style :)

I believe their next stop is Los Angeles, CA. You can find more

A couple seasons ago, Antiques Roadshow did a segment on Nixon
presidential memorabilia. I taped it, but for some reason, there's an
eighteen and a half minute gap on my tape.

Am I wrong in thinking that some of the English A.R.S programmes have been
seen in America on PBS or cable.I was wondering how they stood up with the
American product.A large proportion of the British population has been
practicing saying, with a slightly pleased inflection, "Oh, that's
interesting" when told their widget is worth rather more than their house.

I think they're interesting, myself - primarily for the
information on the items themselves (but NOT for the
appraisals, since those fall into the "educated guess"
arena.) Obviously, there's seldom agreement as to
the value of anything - even among us, here.

Our American "Personal FX - The Collectibles Show"
is broadcast live. Judith Katz-Schwartz, a contributor
here, is one of the rotational appraisers. (Judith, if
you're reading, sorry to call you "rotational" <g> but
you know what I'm trying to say.)

Few of the items brought in by the public are very
valuable (it's rare to see anything appraised at over
$1000.) Lots of newer items show up (many items
resemble lots of the "newbie" questions here.)

Personally, I like both shows - but P/FX comes on
twice daily (seven days a week) so it's easier to catch
"on the fly."

They already have all of their stops scheduled for the next year. I get all
kinds of press release information from them. If you can't track them down any
other way, e-mail me at: anti...@aol.com and I'll see if I can dig out their
schedule for 1998.

The Roadshow lives for the "Ooh, aah!" effect. See February Art's &
Antiques magazine for an article about the show. It includes a
picture of the ship model, valued at $5,000-$7,000 by the Roadshow
although it would probably fetch $5.00 in a Phillipine street market.
The appraiser obviously didn't know the first thing about sailing
vessels. Even as folk art, that boat don't float.

Yes, we get both here in the New Jersey (USA) area. The schedualing is
a bit haphazard, but they are there.

I find there is more information given, technically speaking, on the uK
version, but they are both entertaining.
