This is a second post for information and the last, in case you may have missed
the first. To all who assisted with suggestions the first go round, I
ThankYou!!!

I am attempting to research a relatively unknown artist active in the American
west in the mid to late 1880s, John J. Zang. Mr. Zang is identified as being
an active painter in the Yosemite Valley in 1883, as a landscape painter. The
only references to his work are two, Mr. Zang is listed in "Artists in
California 1786-1940" by Edan Milton Hughes, Published in 1989. "Zang was
active in Yosemite in 1883. He also painted along the Hudson River in New
York", an additional reference also lists his name only in "Who was Who in
American Art." Even with these known listings I can find no information with
regard to a short biographical sketch of his life.
I have searched the records of the National Museum of American Art - via the
Smithsonian Institution Research Information System, and identified 13 of his
painting mostly of western America, although he is also referred also as a
Hudson Valley artist. My research indicates he was active between 1875 to
1889.
From my wife's family we inherited a large oil painting by John J. Zang called
"Cascade Matterhorn" ca 1879-1880. This painting has been in our family since
the late 1870s, for five generations, Where can I find a short Biographical
sketch of John J. Zang? Any assistance or reference material you could
possibly provide would be greatly appreciated!
Mike
