Have an oil painting of woman in hat; very good quality; signed G.
Zagnor. This painting was exhibited at the May Company fine art
exhibition in 1936, and is listed in the exhibition catalog. Due to the
quality of the painting and the caliber of the exhibition, local experts
think G. Zagnor is a pseudonym for someone more well known - but so far
no one can determine who. Any information would be appreciated.

The May Company commissioned fine art from many out-of-work
artists of some standing. My father specialized in
Boticelli-style work. (He was a noted muralist in the 1920's
and designed Grauman's Chinese Theater and the Avalon Casino.)
I know that Emil Cosa, a noted painter from the '20's, also
produced work for them for a while. Nearly all the art
produced on this basis was either unsigned or signed with
pseudonyms. I wish I could give you more information. My
late father was able to name most of the "secret identities"
of the artists. But your experts are probably right about it
being a pseudonym.
