Looking for information on Verni Martin (sp?) furniture. I have a
parlor-size table and matching rocking chair. Both are gold, of course.
The tabletop has a painted scene of a woman and a man w/mandolin in a boat
- roses around edges of table and on apron, graceful legs. The chair has
padded/upholstered seat; carved curli-q splat supporting the back which
has a painted scene of woman in flowing robe and cherub.
As a child, my mother recalls my widowed gr-grmthr having to sell most of
her things during the depression, but telling family, "don't sell the
Verni Martin." For years my mother thought she was talking about
furniture made by someone named "Bernie Martin"!
Is anyone familiar with this type of furniture? When/where was it made?
What is it approx value?
Any info would be greatly appreciated :-)

The Martin Brothers perfected a form of paint decoration in the 18thC to
imitate Chinese lacquer work. The tradition of this type of work
originated in Europe in the 17thC. But Robert Martin produced the most
artistic work.

*Vernis* is French for varnish.
