To coincide with this year's race, Phillips Edinburgh will be holding a
Marine Sale on July 19th. From paintings to portholes, ships bells to
sextants, compasses to chronometers and manuscripts to memorabilia -
all kinds of marine artefacts and ephemera will be up for sale.
This includes the Steward's badge, keys and sovereign case of a member of
the crew of the Titanic. Fred Wormald was a Steward in First Class and
the Lot includes his discharge papers from 1909-1912, when he served on
another White Star Line ship, the 'St Louis'.
Among the paintings for sale is 'The Trawler's Net' by Charles Napier Hemy
(estimate two to three thousand pounds). Hemy came out of a monastery to
live on a boat fitted out as a studio. This enabled him to follow
fishing boats and coastal craft to make sketches.
In a highly specialised field where a ship's identity in a painting or the
master's name on a sextant can make a substantial difference to the value,
Phillips will provide free guidance, at any branch throughout the UK,
which may reveal an unknown treasure. If you think you may have a treasure,
email phil...@jsime.demon.co.uk or phone Nick Curnow or Trevor Kyle on
0131 225 2266 for free valuation and advice.
Entries to the sale may be viewed during the two days prior to the sale and
you may email or phone Phillips if you wish to buy a catalogue.
