I have an oil painting that was done by by great-grandmother. I'm not sure
when, but I am guessing in the 1890s. It has darkened with age, and I wondered
if there is a cleaning method that I could use on it. It has great sentimental
value to me, so I don't want to risk damaging it. On the other hand, I don't
have the $$$ to have it conserved professionally. Any suggestions?

Frances

Frances, I hate to say but but cleaning an old oil painting is VERY
difficult and NOT recommended for a do-it-your-self project. The risk you
may put the painting to is not worth trying to save a buck or two. If you
don't have the money now, wait until you do, then hire a professional.
Besides it may not be as expensive as you think. Have you checked it out?
You can call the Conservation Referral Service of the AIC and get a few
names of people in your area and do a little shopping. The chances of
finding someone who works out of thier home, without the overhead of a
large studio, are very good. Write to the American Institute for
Conservation of Historic and Artistc Works at 1717 K St NW. Suite 301

Good Luck
