Seemingly decent find at an estate sale recently. OOCB of the USS
Granite State, by listed artist H. H. Howe. Trying to dig up info on
the artist, best I can do is that he was born in Buckfield, Maine and
died in the 1960s, painted a lot os seascapes. Seems that there used
to be a site that gave the average price per square inch of artists
work, for the life of me I cannot find nor remember what site it was.
Does anyone know what site it was? Per chance has anyone ever heard of
a gallery that handles any amount of his work? I know this one is a
long shot since I'm the resident Mainer and don't know of any
galleries/dealers here that deal in this artist. From what I've been
able to Google for sale history his low was $175 and high $400 for
seascapes.
The ship in the painting is probably more interesting than the painting
itself, it was originally named the USS Alabama, but the US Civil War
broke out and the name was changed to the USS New Hampshire, then
changed again to the USS Granite State when the gov't wanted to name a
new ship the USS New Hampshire.
Even at the low or lower I can't go wrong, it was sitting on the top of
the dumpster, I pulled it out and paid the whopping asking price of $2.
Half made me wish that I'd had some hip boots in the car to wade
through the rest of the "junk" in the dumpster, not that anything else
visible was of interest but the temptation of the unknown lurked.
