I thought I would post a study of an oil painting I neglected because of
an error in interpretation. When I first viewed it, I tossed it off as a
paint by numbers because of its limited palette and common nautical
scene. I had the chance to review it recently, and discovered it was not
a paint by numbers. In fact, I think it is a nicely done nautical
painting.
The study is here http://publish.shaw.ca/cjbeach/ and all comments are
welcome in this forum. I believe it to be English, late Victorian. The
carved wood frame is nicely fit with m / t joints, and there is no gesso
on it. The painting was backed by an English newspaper (all monetary
references made in pounds) however not enough survives to accurately
date it. There is a mention of the year 1864, however not enough of the
context remains to use the date.
(N.B the first photo in the study did not show on my browser, and I am
too dim to know why, however the others represent the object well.)
Thank you for any interest!
