Liz, a couple of questions for you, too. Fair is fair.
Is the name of this group alt.freeinformationservice ?
Did it occur to you at all that Smith is a very common name
and that there might be more than one J. B. Smith in the world?
The only one I ever knew (or heard of) was a Geometry teacher.
He is still alive as far as I know.
Get thee to the library and do your own research you lazy bum.

Being often fairly housebound by health matters when I am interested
in something, I usually ask on the internet groups such as this. I
have asked questions here before and received what I believe to be
honest answers, from friendly people without the sarcastic rudeness
which you have shown. I am well aware of the amount of Smiths in the
world, but there surely cannot be very many J.B.Smiths who are
artists. As for this group being an information service as you put it,
I thought it was in fact a place where one can come to ask questions
and receive answers. In other groups such as the dog groups where I
have a certain amount of expertise, I am only too happy to answer
questions if I can, and hopefully do it without the sarcasm you have
shown.

Thank you Carol.
I had not heard of the James Burrel part before.

I know no more than the name and initials I'm afraid - and that he was
an artist and maybe English, although I am not certain.

I will make this my last reply to you and state publicly that I hope
you never have to go through the torment of cancer and several other
problems as I have done and still do. You seem to be a very unhappy
person who gives no useful help in this newsgroup.

She was not looking to buy or sell, didn't post a binary, and [still]
doesn't reply rudely. Granted, her request was extremely broad, but, if
someone has a handy reference out there and could point out 4 or 5 JBS's
with very little effort I think the original request was simply for dates],
what's so tough? This might be enough to point her in a direction to finish
her quest.
Her plea was innocent enough, certainly not worthy of some of the vitriol
spewed in her direction. The effort to research her posting habits would
have been better spent by simply pulling a book from one of our reference
libraries or just pointing her to an internet search engine which she may
not been aware of.
Many people who post demanding or just plain stupid requests here are worthy
of a "poke in the eye." Let's keep our perspective.

Hmm. Well Doug must thank you for all this info. The painting is dated
1858 and is a landscape about 36 x 30ins. It is of Brinkburn Priory in
Northumberland. England. Obviously done before the restoration which
is now complete. I am thinking that it must be either your John
Burrell or Joseph B. from the dates you have supplied. I did in fact
find a J.B.Smith painting on the internet for sale, but it is so
completely different (a single rose in brightish colours) that I tend
to think it is not by the same artist. I have had this painting for
over 30 years now and I seem to remember many years ago an art dealer
in England having many of J.B's similar to mine for sale and always
advertising them in the English Country Life Magazines. I have not
seen one of these mags in a long time now so do not know if he still
advertises or not. I believe his name was Grange or Greene.
I do appreciate your giving me this list. If by any chance this gives
you an idea of which one did my painting, please do let me know. I
must admit, while I like the painting, I am not crazy about it, but my
daughter has always loved it and of course it will be hers one day. I
suppose the Genealogist part of me would like to know a little more
about the artist.

Thank you Olio for your help. As you will see in my reply to Doug
earlier, I "think" I have it down to James Burell or Joseph B. Pretty
sure it is one or t'other.

It's most likely James Burrell (Smith) fl.1850-1881 Landscape painter and
watercolourist (fairly common). Lived mainly at Alnwick, Northumberland.
Although sometimes James Burrell's work is confused with John Brandon (Smith)
and vice versa, both painted with similar subjects and similar dates. James
Burrell exhibited 1850-81 ONLY at the SS (Society of British Artists, became
'Royal' {RBS} 1887 while under the Presidency of Whistler)
....... Send a good detailed photo of your picture and a detail of the
signature to Christie's or Sotheby's (ENGLAND) and either will confirm the
artist as quick as a shake of a donkey's hind leg.

Thanks, Rich. Even when I find a serious post unintentionally humorous,
I'll generally wait a day or two to point it out, to avoid pre-empting
an informative reply. Part of the joy of reading r.a. has always been
the humor directed at the demanding/clueless/obnoxious posters; the
unfunny nastiness that has recently appeared is not enjoyable in the
least.

Kind Sir
Seems to me you do indeed "have our man". I shall keep your list of
other paintings and thank you for your generous posting. It pales only
by the kindness shown me in your very next posting, when you "wipe my
tab clean" and obliterate all monies owed for the work and time which
has gone into answering my question, unlike those who would make
lucripetousnous and nummamorousnous their byword. Your ability to
coruscate and surprise this group with flashes of wit and intellectual
illumination have surely brought a smile to the lips of all who read
you daily.
May your firkin always be full.

What a splendid idea! Obviously signatures would be quite different -
at least one would hope so. I shall consider looking into that.
Many thanks for your input.
