I was
in chaarge of buying for a chain of 200 TV/audio stores in Canada at that
time, and we had several trips to Zenith H.O. to talk to the sales people.

Actually it's a pretty good one.
Same thing with my Ferrari. Belts, idlers, and the water pump
because it was SUCH a PITA to get at. If you were in there, do it
all. Head gaskets, valve seals...the parts list was two pages.
Tune ups were nearly rebuilds.

And in cars as well... race engines are routinely rebuilt; and it's
not uncommon for an engine to be "gone through" while undergoing
somewhat routine maintenance. For instance - many (most) modern
engines use a belt instead of chain for the cam - unlike a chain they
need to be regularly replaced. Honda engines are a prime example...

No one is suggesting replacing ALL resistors on an old radio,
just because. But, what IS being suggested, is replacing resistors
that are bad as measured, that are bad by performance, are
discolored, or are historically likely to be bad.
I do the same thing. Damned near every time.
I have a Webster wire recorder I couldn't get a decent level out

Replacing all the resistors on an old radio just because, makes as much
sense as putting braces on false teeth.

 Because it's so common, Jeff.
There are a lot of hacks out there. Professional hacks, at that.
The level of service you're speaking of is thorough, and based on
much more than the 'if it's on it sounds beautiful' mentality that's
very common both in the hobby and in commercial tech service, today.

Yes. For a resistance-coupled amplifier, you look at the output
impedance of the driving stage (12SQ7 in an AA5) and the input
impedance of the driven stage, (50L6 in an AA5) and figure out where
the coupling cap impedance is going to reduce the drive to the output
by 50%. That's the 3db power (6db voltage) point---the point at which

Actually, the parts are timed out, regardless of performance. So,
an overhaul of a currently well running engine is common.
We just did the helicopter last year, even though performance was
spot on.
