  Wire nuts do belong in boxes and not in hidden places, or boxes that are &lt;br&gt; hidden, or outside of an electrical box. Electrical tape is very good, it also helps hold multiple wires together &lt;br&gt; like a strain relief. So I do it often. &lt;br&gt; greg

  The end to the story is that, while struggling with this switch it broke &lt;br&gt; apart anyway right in my hands. With the internal parts exposed I just &lt;br&gt; removed the retaining blade-connectors with a needle nose pliers and threw &lt;br&gt; the remaining mess in the trash.
