Here is someone's blog about AFRTS. Some interesting photos & stories.
Don't blame me if you spend a lot of time looking at it. ;-)

You're right, that's a real time sink. 8-)

Makes me think I ought to dig out my air checks, etc. from Radio
Homesteader, Pusan -- '63--'64.

As of some time on the night of April 30, AFN Korea ceased programming,
leaving only a still of the WTC1 workers putting in the girder that made the
edifice the tallest building in NYC. That still (with no audio) remained
until early yesterday afternoon, at which time they threw the switch and
killed the signals. This marks the last OTA television signal for AFRTS
anywhere in the world. AFN Korea was the last such system extant, as Korea
is the last country still using the NTSC television system. All other NTSC
broadcasts will end in Korea sometime in 2014. AFN has no intention of
installing ATSC HDTV plants, and will instead continue serving troops,
contractors and their families using base cable systems and DTS/DTH
satellite.

AFN Korea plants covered bases in Dongducheon, Uijeongbu, Seoul, Osan,
Pyeongtaek, Daegu, Chinhae and Busan, mostly using low power UHF
transmitters. I'll post a link to the still I recorded (not great quality, I
long ago disconnected my UHF antenna for the local AFN channel, so was using
just a Sony Hi-8 TV-recorder off it's own antenna.

Wow. And so it ends!

I bet the AM 1440 at Humphreys is still running only the channel of
stereo sat feeds? And is the FM still out of phase? LOL

Correct on both counts. It's impossible to listen to them (the Eagle FM) on
a monaural radio, it's all splatter and high frequency scratchiness
(overprocessed as WELL as out of phase). All the AM in the country (AFN) is
the same. One channel from a stereo satellite feed. The idiots don't seem to
be aware of what summing is. Just as well they shut their TV stations off,
those were never quite right, either. Overpeaked video, and improper chroma
phasing, leaving a lot of sharp edges and purplish people that could never
be adjusted out with the tint control..

One wonders where their engineer{s} got their licenses. Perhaps the FCC was
giving out GROL's in boxes of Cracker Jack? I recently bought a 1.5 watt
television transmitter to play with. Actually kicks out about 3 watts on Ch.
6, only about 1.2 on Ch. 58. It's a cheap thing, and I wouldn't want to
broadcast with it for more than a few minutes to play with, as it has no
vestigial sideband filtering, and puts out the audio subcarrier at 4.5 MHz
EITHER SIDE of the video carrier. It's a lovely thing to look at on my
spectrum analyzer... but even THAT gives a much better looking picture than
the old AFN Ch. 58.

I don't even have a General ticket and I do better than that at the
places I've built, worked at, etc.!!
