I have 2 on the bench, both have 80's in them, and the tag
that is still in one of the cabinets says 80 but the Riders says the
bigger 5Z3 rectifier.

Which is correct? isnt this a bit much for the poor little 80?

THanks

Keith

Keith... My two 16B tombstones and my 16B cathederal
all have 80s. FWIW.

Table models take 80, console takes 5Z3.

Many radios probably had an overloaded 80 in there that should have used
the 5Z3. Question is, what was the transformer 5v filament winding
rated at (2A or 3A)? Use the tube manual and add up the plate and
screen currents from the typical ratings for all of the tubes use and
see if you are exceeding the 80's output ratings. (Remember that the 80
can handle more current when the set has a choke input filter).

I believe all the 16 models use type 80s. Only Philco from that
period that used the 5Z3 is a model 500 or 501. FWIW.

Per the Philco Radio book: The model 16, 500 and 501 used the 5Z3.
The 16B models used an 80 rectifier. That's on page 169
of Ron Ramirez's original Philco Radio book.

Hi,

If its a 5-band console, it uses chassis type code 122 or 123 with a
5Z3.
If its a 5-band Baby Grand it uses chassis code 121 with an 80.
A 4-band console uses chassis code 126 or 127 with 5Z3.
A 4-band Baby Grand uses chassis code 125 with 80.

The 5Z3 versions generate 15W audio output versus 10W for the table
Baby Grand models.

For my own curiousity, did Philco ever market a 16B, not a
16, that used a 5Z3?

Reason I ask is that the 16B sets were generally all table top sets, with
10 watt audio as noted early. The 16B's used type 80 rectifiers in my
experience. The 15 watt floor models may have use 5Z3's, but then it
wouldn't be a 16B, which is the model that was asked about.

Hi,

I'm not aware of any Baby Grand (table model) that used the 5Z3,
though someone probably at sometime or another substituted a 5Z3 for
an 80 (or vice versa). The Table top B models all used the code 121 or
125 chassis types with 80. Most consoles used the 122 or 126 chassis
with 5Z3. I have a chairside (16RX) that uses the code 123, with a
5Z3.

Aha! this explains it nicely... mine are both 5 band Baby Grands with 121
chassis.

Thanks

Keith
