I wonder if one can check the gear out ..... ;-)

"During the last two decades, the number of non audiophiles that became
audiophiles is huge in China. There are different reasons of the efforts
from different parties. One reason is that McIntosh's China distributor
gives out free McIntosh to public libraries. It gives the general public the
exposure to hi-fi. Here a link of some pictures of an open hi-fi meeting in
a city's (3 hours drive distance from Shanghai) public library. They have in
that meeting: A professor from a music school talking about music, the
editor-in-chief from a hi-fi magazine talking about the equipment, the head
of the library was in the meeting to greet audiophiles and none audiophiles
and gather comments on how to run the meeting better and the library has 3
A/V rooms. This is the largest one."

Let the photos load and scroll down -

Well, that's just gotta suck.

But are the Chinese-made McIntoshes? For that matter, maybe they are
"Macintoshes" just like you used to be able to buy Rollexes.

But seriously, it sounds like North America fifty years ago, the start of
a slow climb up rather than innovation.

What kind of speakers are those that look like tubas?

All that stuff is insanely expensive in the US......That library looks like
the NY AUdio SHow at the Hilton.... Not to sound too "Mike Savage"
like....The west has sold it's soul to China.....They love our culture and
right now are responsible for manufacturing about 90% of it........In the
mean time...a system like that costs as much as my house if I were to buy it
here.......Mt local library was just expanded but there is no investment in
audio visual........Also consider the fact that audio-visual is taboo in USA
literary circles because it diverts our youngsters from reading and makes
them illiterate......

BTW:...Those tuba-like speakers are popular in Europe and can be found in
issues of Absolute SOund etc. Not sure I remember the name, but somebody
will come up with it.......

We will be touring in China in late January - and part of the tour
includes a school and attached library (my wife is a school teacher).
I will ask.
