There were many TRF sets with regenerative detectors.
The regenerative stage is not so much for gain as for
increased selectivity also works as a BFO when made to
oscillate. Its similar to a Q multiplier. The tuned RF
stages are often used to prevent the regenerative stage from
causing interference when it goes into oscillation by
isolating from the antenna. A regenerative stage can be used
to receive CW without a separate BFO by getting it to just
oscillate. However, the famous Navy RAK and RAL receivers
have two tracking RF stages and a regenerative detector the
latter being used as an autodyne for CW. These are
ship-board receivers and must not radiate.
