IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN A WEEK SINCE I SENT YOU A CORRIGATED CARDBOARD BOX
OF THE TYPE USED IN THE BATTERIES FOR THE TRANSOCEANIC. SURELY IT
HASN'T TAKEN THIS LONG FOR THE POST OFFICE TO DELIVER. THE ONLY REASON I
CAN COME UP WITH IS EMBARRASMENT ON YOUR PART.

Cool your jets, there, Bubba. I'm still waiting on a check sent out
last Tuesday from St Louis.

Yes, it CAN have taken this long.

Have you forgotten this is the Christmas mailing season?

Yes mail is slow right now, in fact the post office is currently
having all kinds of problems - some weather related, some staffing
issues, and of course - it is "that time of year"...

I shipped more than 40 packages last week - some were delivered right
away - (even to both coasts) and others appear to have languished in
sorting centers for a couple of days (particularly Memphis). Texas has
definitely been effected (and guess where Jeff is).

I'm sure he'll enlighten us with his usual careful and thorough
analysis once he has it in hand... (never known Jeff to slink away in
the dark... don't figure he'll do it here, either).

best regards...

Are you attempting to get me to accuse you of being an asshat
again Bill?

It ain't here. I haven't received it. Zip, nada zilch.

Did the mule they use for postal service get stuck in the
mud?

What address did you send it to?
I clearly posted the correct mailing address here.

Sho' nuff. I've been a bit preoccupied with replacing the 1-1/4"
gas line in the store that was 80% rotted out. I'm kind of tired
of having a 5000 sq ft walk in freezer out here. Also, up-grading
the '50s vintage Zinsco circuit breaker panel with new 200 Amp
service. You know, minor things so I can get the Mercantile up
and running and generating income.

That's what I've been doing since last Monday.

I'll post a couple of pictures of that over on the binaries.

And no, I ain't ignoring you Bill. But you missed my Wheaties(tm)

you know, guys, if you just remained silent and let Jeff post his
observations when he has had time to make an examination, there would be a
lot less invective being spewed here. My experience is that if Jeff says he

Ok, you guys know enough about me to know that I do Bill Turner's
website. Jeff Angus is also one of my good net-buddies. Neither one
pays me.

Graham, you can butt out now because you have never done or dealt with
old radio restoration..at least not in this forum.

So, since I seem to have TWO dawgs in this race may I say something
positive about both parties?

If you want a battery box for cheap (it really is POSTPAID, gra)... I
guess you can make your own cheaper out of any pasteboard box. If you
want one made out of wood or masonite ... nothing has been said to
discourage that option.

yeah, Bill T is pissing into Jeff's cornflakes because Jeffy made the
challenge. No biggie. Jeff is busy and his evaluation of the box will
be forthcoming. My crystal ball says Jeff will be, umm, kinda critical
given the relationship - haha.

But Jeff, you have the box in your hands and it really shouldn't take
more than 120 seconds to form an opinion about it and post your
impressions. The longer you wait says that the 'problems' are hard to
identify :)

Huh? Who is paying who (the big bucks) here?

Turner sent Jeff a box asking for an opinion. We know how that is going
to come out.

Where do you come up with revealing stripes and big bucks and wearing
the shoes?

Michael A, you haven't ever done any restoration work on old radios

Doood. Will you please give Micheal A a job?. He's a young man, my
age, and hasn't seen the inside of a workplace in about 10-15 years and
I think he needs one to re-establish his credibility, if not his self
esteem.

If not...lets take up a collection to buy him an antique radio.

I'll front 50% of the expense. Maybe you other guys will pitch in.
Michael A, trust me, I'm good for it. Pick out a ~50 dollar radio on
ebay and we brothers will help you along with it.

Just pick one out and say the word Micheal A. You're a smart guy and it
would be good to have you in the loop of old radio discussions.

What the F*** is your problem Turner? I thought I made it
clear I have stuff that needs attending to right now.

I'm trying to get a general store up and running. In
addition to the service upgrades, I have to deal with a
bunch of vendors, state and government agencies and view

the store stocked.

Sorry I haven't had a stroke yet so I can sit around all

I know Jeff posted a few pictures, but not near all of the

You are undoubtedly the most arrogant self centered obnoxious
bastard I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with Bill.

Now, since it's Saturday morning, I've had time to look at the
damn thing.

I've found a source to buy them direct:
http://www.papermart.com
Product number: 073630 10" x 4" x 2" white kraft tuck top mailer.
$0.45 each in quantities of 100.

This all started with this post from Bill:
> YESTERDAY, FROM A GENTLEMAN WHO QUESTIONED THE ABILITY OF MY
> TRANSOCEANIC BATTERY TO STAND UP AGAINST THE RIGORS OF USE IN THE RADIO.
> I ASSURED HIM OF THE STURDYNESS OF THE CORRIGATED CARDBOARD SEVERAL

> OF PLASTIC OR STEEL? NO, ITS PLAIN OLD CARDBOARD.

http://dialcover.com/zenbatt.jpg $23.00

This is what one of the originals looked like. (Thanks to Phil
for having an image available online.)

http://www.antiqueradio.org/art/ever752.jpg

These are the ones available from Bill Morris:

http://home.comcast.net/~morrised2006/radios/radio6.htm

Now, as to the ruggedness of the box offered by Turner:

Yuppers, its sturdy alright. Typical manufactured folding
mailer. Should be able to withstand considerable amounts
of handling and abuse.

Or you can spend a little bit more and get one that looks
like it belongs in the radio.

Well, it is commercially available from a quality manufacturer. As
opposed to something you cut out and cobbled together in your "shop."

Since all I got was the cardboard box, I didn't make any judgment
on the contents.

Ok, pick pick pick pick.

For 100 boxes, from the manufacturer to Ranger TX, shipping is $12.98.
So, that's $0.39 each for the boxes at a cost of $0.13 each to ship.
Let's see, that is $0.52 each. At your end cost.

As to your shipping cost, you're the one that plays the "Postpaid"
game with level rates where you over charge 1/4th of your customers
to subsidize the cost to the other 1/4th.

> I HOPE THIS HAS TAUGHT YOU A LESSON ON HOW NOT TO BAD MOUTH ANYTHING

The first time you were going on about your battery boxes, you weren't
buying them from a packaging company. You had some cobbled together
piece of crap with a single wall thickness that was spray painted.
(Apparently to cover the original content markings on the recycled
cardboard you used.)

And for the record, I wasn't bad mouthing your box, I was pointing out
the difference between a corrugated cardboard box vs a stiff paperboard
carton wrapped around a solid Masonite filler. And in the process
specified just exactly how corrugated cardboard boxes are rated both
to puncture resistance and deformation.

so all of this ranting makes me wonder if a solid state modern battery
replacement would be a thing desired by enough people to be worth the
effort - something with a Lithium ion or NMH battery that could be
recharged, and a small inverter to produce the required voltages - A lot of
these batteries are in the 3 to 5 volt range, so A battery should be
straight forward, and a simple boost inverter can make B and C (I suppose 22
and 45V right?) It's been a long time since I looked inside a TO, but I
seem to recall a battery that was about 4X4X6 inches, so that can hold
several cell phone batteries, or NiCd batteries and have plenty of room for
a well shielded inverter -- how much current is needed at the different
voltages? What's a reasonable run time before recharging?

That's not a half bad idea.

Shielding is one thing. Filtering is another. Inverters are dirty
enough that a T/O would get noise in the audio from the dirty A/C.

But I like your thinking, here.

I believe that it is well within the realm of the practical to filter a

I'm not going to try right now, I'm still machining the Christmas gift for

Tony Maher makes something like you describe. Users report that any
noise is barely noticeable.

Here's a link to an old site. There may be something newer.

I think you're on to something, here. And an experiment is

For my own use, a couple of hours would be necessary.

I don't have input requirements offhand. I'll look those up.

But how would you case it?

A) A piece of cardboard?
B) a piece of corrugated cardboard?
C) pot the whole thing in epoxy, with a paper wrapper for that authentic
look?
D) a plastic box, again with the paper wrapper?
E) a light wooden box, again with the paper wrapper?
F) a deluxe super-strong version with a metal case, again with the paper
wrapper?
G) just supply the connector and the module, and let the owner decide
and fuss over the packaging?

well, I think at a minimum, I would offer a premium option of a solid
stainless steel case guaranteed to withstand a drop from 500 feet into the
ocean or your money back - (see picture of my mill on my web page, I really
could do this ... :-)

I would expect that power dissipation would be the actual practical
determinant - the skin, whatever it was would have to let the internally
generated heat get out. Paper over aluminum will work well if dissipation
is a watt or two - at at 80% efficiency, that would let you have up to 10
watts of B+ I imagine that is enough

But, Bill M posted some links to existing designs, one of which is a MOSFET
variant of the circuit I have on my web page for driving a CD ignition, so
there may be little need for design inovation. A switching power supply
extracted from a dead LCD monitor would be a great way to get some B+ at
about the right voltage - the fluorescent backlight runs at around the right
voltage and power, and the little supplies are pretty quiet (and about a 1/2
inch square) - if you can find a dead LCD monitor, or a dead scanner, check
the lamp supply and see if it's still alive and you can start experimenting
from there.

Wrong, as usual. I have been out of work three years, and on
permanent disability for five years. two of those years were spent
stuck in bed when i couldn't walk without help. There is nothing wrong
with my 'self esteem'. What is wrong is idiots like you who don't
understand what 'disabled' means. Its not the same for everyone. Some
of the most disabled are bigots like you who think other people's health
issues are a joke.

I can stand about two hours a day, but between carpal tunnel and
nerve damage to my wrists I now have trouble holding a lot of tools. I
also have what feels like a constant electric shock up my left arm to my
elbow. The only 'cure' is for them to sever the nerve bundle at my
elbow, leaving the left hand completely useless. Since I need that hand
to use a cane the choice is get rid of the tingle, or be able to walk.

I don't need any more projects right now. My house sat empty for five
years because I wasn't able to climb the couple steps. Now, I have a
lot of repairs to do so it is habitable. I have to remove the bad
furnace. Built a new base cabinet for the kitchen sink, after a small
leak destroyed it. (Damn particle board!) Since I can't match the
cabinet doors, I have to make over 20 new ones. I have about two more
years work to do to make it more handicap accessible or keep living in a
12' * 24' cottage. I know you think it shouldn't take that long, but
you are ignorant of my health even though you make snide remarks and
post empty replies when I mention anything. then you have the balls to
claim, 'Nothing personal'.

> If not...lets take up a collection to buy him an antique radio.

I don't need another project right now. I do need a crank knob for
my National NC183R. The original knob broke when the industrial
shelving the radio was on collapsed. Right now that, and every other
piece of electronics doesn't matter. I'll start looking for a
replacement knob when the home repairs are finished, and the house is
paid off. I figure about six to ten more years, if I live that long.

At least I can spell my name properly.

I no longer discuss what I'm doing on the group, because someone
always bitches about it. When I tried to give away some equipment &
radios, I caught hell for that. It just isn't worth another headache.
