Looking for a decent scan of Rider's

They're in Volume Six, pages 6-19, 6-20 and 6-21. The old BPS copies of
Rider's that I have are all blurred on those pages. Has anyone tried those
new scans that are available on eBay from that guy in Idaho ?? If they're
any good, I think it's about time to invest in a set.

I've bought many sets of Riders on CD and DVD, and all have been the
BPS or clones thereof, until I got the radio-data set that came out at
the end of September last year. Theirs is superior, and also very
reasonable. Currently they sell it on eBay about $20 under what I
paid for mine.

If you have the set of Rider books, keep them for now. There are
reasons why the Radio Data discs have not replaced my full set of
Rider books. I have been recommending these products to many people in
the past, but I have some reservations.
Lou, the image quality from the Radio Data discs is far superior to
the other sets on the market. The scans print out better than some of
the pages in my original Riders books. But I have noticed a serious
limitation in the functionality of the Radio Data products, which has
caused me to not use them in favor of some of the other versions. And
that limitation has indeed kept me using my hard copy books, rather
than the discs. I've meant to contact them about the problem I've had
with their discs (Riders, Philco, Zenith, etc.), but have been
procrastinating. Now that I am reminded again, I will follow through
and contact them. Until I give them a fair chance to address the
issue, I don't want to identify the issue publicly. Let me get in
touch with them and see what they say, and I'll get back to the group
on this topic.

I promised to report back after hearing from the people over at Radio
Data, so here I am.
The limitation I mentioned previously with the discs was that the
security settings used by Radio Data disabled the "snapshot tool"
function of Adobe Acrobat. That meant that if you zoomed in on a
small area of the scans to look at a specific part of the circuitry,
you could not directly print just that enlarged area through Acrobat.
The way the disc was set up, it only allowed you to print the full
page you were looking at. If you wanted to print just the enlarged
area, you were forced to save a screen shot, and process and print it
through an auxiliary program such as MS Photo Editor. Not only is
that time consuming and a lot of extra work, but you end up losing
much of the resolution of the scans. I know from the number of times
I've dealt with the small print on the Rider pages that enlargements
in print form are a "must have" feature that any disc form of Rider's
would need. Not everyone can have a computer next to their workbench
to look at the enlargement on the display as they work, and many of us
like to print a copy to "trace" our repair efforts on.
My guess was that the security settings on the disc were to try to
prevent unauthorized file sharing (theft) with others. I can't blame
them for that, they put a lot of work into this project, and it's not
fair for others to steal their work. They have produced a very nice
set of scans for us, and they offer them at a very reasonable price.
I emailed Radio Data, and received responses from both Dale and Roy
there. They had a meeting to discuss this issue, and whether or not
they were going to be able to remedy this situation. Roy reported
back this morning with some great news. Roy told me that they have
decided to include the snapshot tool on the next version of the Rider
disc, version 2.0, which they will release this week. That fix will
allow the direct printing of enlarged selected areas of any page on
the disc.
If the following paragraphs sound like a product endorsement, it is.
Many people have asked me about the Radio Data set of scans, because
they know I have bought so many different versions of Rider discs in
the past looking for a good set that can actually replace the 23
volume set of books. Finally there is a set that may be able to
accomplish this. Because of the great work Radio Data did to create
these scans, and their excellent customer service, I feel it's only
fair that I bring attention to them. After all, we too often hear
about problems with suppliers to the hobby, but we never seem to give
enough kudos to those who deserve them.
I'd like to publicly thank the folks at Radio Data for this decision
to improve the functionality of their discs. Through this recent
contact and previous interaction with Radio Data last year, I can say
they have been extremely willing to make sure their customers are kept
happy. They also encourage any feedback that will help them in making
their products better.
With this improvement going into version 2.0 of the Rider discs, I now
can recommend this set of Rider scans to everyone. The image quality
is very impressive compared to any other set I have seen, and many of
the scans are far more readable than the pages on many of my original
sets of "paper" Riders. The restoration of the snapshot tool will
allow this disc to perform all the tasks I would need in everyday use.
This set is the only set I know of that can replace a paper set of
Riders. And it takes up much less space, and is far easier to carry.
No need to pay $500+ for a full set of books when this disc seemingly
has it all.
So for those of you who were disappointed with the BPS set, or who
have been paying big bucks trying to complete their book set of the
Rider radio manuals, contact Radio Data and see if their Rider version
2.0 meets your needs.
And be sure to explore their web site for some useful tips and also
some "free stuff". They have a nice set of scans of a Zenith manual
there!
