STUDYING NAVIGATION by Henry Dawson (1811-1878)
Size 10 x 12 inches landscape format, oil on wooden panel, framed.
Monogrammed and dated 1849.
This small painting shows Henry Dawson's younger son Alfred (later to become
a noted Victorian artist and engraver himself, and biographer of his father)
at age 6 in a rural location studying a small home made raft on a pond. It
is a very charming childhood picture which was probably painted during the
Dawson family's annual Lake District holiday - they lived in Liverpool in
1849. It was exhibited at the British Institution in 1850 (number 260) and
was sold at auction by Phillips London in 1997.
Price £5400 delivered UK.
THE MOUTH OF THE MENAI STRAITS by Henry Thomas Dawson (b1841, fl1860-78).
Size 16 x 24 inches landscape format, oil on canvas, framed. Artist's name
and address written on reverse of canvas, the address dates the painting to
1860-61.
Henry Thomas (Hal) Dawson was the elder son of noted Victorian portrait,
landscape and marine artist Henry Dawson (1811-1878) and elder brother of
Alfred Dawson who became known for his pen drawings and etchings. He
exhibited at the British Institution from1860 to 1867 and at the Royal
Academy between 1866 and 1873. On the death of his father in 1878 he seems
to have lost interest in painting, although a few works are known from after
that date. Professionally he was an engineer and sea-captain with a passion
for invention, and a keen Thames yachtsman. His talent for painting was
passed on because he was the father of Montague Dawson (1895 - 1973),
probably the best known marine painter of the twentieth century.
