Part 8 of 9 - Europe

This guide contains a world list of vegetarian restaurants,
vegetarian-friendly restaurants, natural food stores, vegetarian
organizations, etc.

If you have any additions or corrections please e-mail them to
one of the below listed regional co-ordinators and/or myself.

** Format your corrections and new entries in the same format as **
** those in the listings. Keep comments and reviews short, simple, **
** and straight to the point. Explicitly specify any listings **
** which are to be removed. Correctly formatted updates will be **
** listed in the next release of the guide. Improperly formatted **
** and/or ciphered updates may never make it. **

Proper formatting will cut down on errors, save the co-ordinators
a lot of precious time, and thus allow the guide to be updated
quicker and released more frequently.

If you wish to become the editor of the listings for your area, please
contact me. I no longer have enough time to take care of all the
listings and would appreciate a few regional co-ordinators, especially
for geographical locations (i.e. large areas). Currently we have

occasionally. I no longer have the time to post it on a regular basis.
If you would like to take over, please contact me. If someone requests
listings for a given area, please feel free to post sections of the
guide in response. If the guide has not been posted in full for longer
than 3 weeks, then feel free to re-post complete parts of the guide or
the guide in full. You may post mail-server and/or FTP instructions
for obtaining the guide at any time.

The latest officially posted copy of the Guide is available via mail

The Vegetarian Society of the U.K. (VSUK) publishes the "International
Vegetarian Travel Guide", which concentrates on Vegetarian Restaurants
& guesthousts in England & Europe, listing establishments for each
city in every country. Phone & order the 1992 guide. It's about 4
pounds, and you can put it on your Mastercard or Visa. Using a credit
card avoids the conversion problem. ATTENTION: from the USA, be SURE
to specify AIR-MAIL, or it'll take two months by ship. The
International Vegetarian Travel Guide "Lists hundreds of places to eat
out & stayover!". The Vegetarian Handbook "The guide to living a
vegetarian lifestyle!" about 3 pounds. Also, you can become a member
of VSUK via phone, and then you'd receive their [great] magazine "The
Vegetarian" and the Vegetarian Handbook. They also have a children's
quarterly magazine. I think the magazine is 10 pounds. With membership
16 pounds. Airmail delivery is 10 pounds additional. Their phone

The Vegan Society of the U.K. publishes "The Vegan Holiday &
Restaurant Guide". It covers mostly England, Scotland, & Wales. Their

quarterly magazine "The Vegan".

Germany

| Germany has a chain of 'health food' stores called "Reformhaus". This
chain is not recommended though because the food is expensive and not
"biological" (i.e. comes from 'normal' farmers), and there's always a
| waste of packing material. Look for stores with `Bio-Laden' or
`Naturkostladen' in their names, they're usually better.

| There are several guides of vegetarian restaurants in Germany around.
| You should get them in almost every `Bio-Laden'.

Berlin
------

There are literally hundreds of health food stores in Berlin,
especially in districts like Berlin-Kreuzberg, where the `alternative
culture' is quite popular. There is a health food store or health food
restaurant on every other street corner.

There is also a wealth of vegetarian restaurants in Berlin. In
addition Indian restaurants and pizzerias usually serve several
vegetarian meals. There are numerous Indian restaurants in the center
of Berlin. It might help to have a look into the Yellow Pages under
the section `Gaststaetten'.

Vegetarian Restaurants:

Hakuin, Martin-Luther-Str. 1, 1000 Berlin 30
- Probably the most popular vegetarian restaurant in Berlin. It's
large and expensive. Someone said it has a `Buddhist image'.

- Inexpensive, customers are mainly young people.

stir-fried gnocchi, a Chinese/Italian treat that is not to be missed!

This is probably the only country in the world where McDonald's sells
a vegetarian burger. It's called the "Groenteburger" and it's
available at all of the 84 McDonald's restaurants in the Netherlands.
It is supposedly made of potatoes, peas, carrots, corn, onion, and
spices.

Vegetarian guides are sold everywhere. ex: "Vegetarian Guide to the
Scottish Highlands and Islands", "Vegetarian London", etc.

There are several nationally-circulated vegetarian-oriented magazines
available in any big newsagents that have pages and pages of small
ads.

Wimpy, Burger King, and just about every restaurant chain except for
McDonalds serves a bean burger at its stores in the UK. Also, most
main-line railway stations have a "Casey Jones" burger shop in them,
selling "Mexican Bean Burgers", which are much the same thing again.

choose, in many areas of Britain, offering accommodation which meets
the standards set by the British Tourist Authority for comfort and
cleanliness at around #15-17 per person per night. All bookings are
made through Auntie's office.

with three flesh eaters who were all absolutely thrilled with the
food. No frills, but the service is spectacular. Dish of the day,
#2.75. Open noon-2:30pm & 6pm-midnight. Sun open noon-midnight.

- Food mostly from the Gujarat region of India. Good vegan choices.
The lunchtime buffet is extremely good and cheap at #3.95 plus
drinks (if required). I think 'lunchtime' extends quite late into
the afternoon and the buffet is 'Eat as much as you like'. Open
| Mon-Fri noon-2:45pm & 6pm-11:30pm.

Indian Veg Bhel Poori House, 92-93 Chapel Market Angel, Islington,

- Quality Indian vegetarian food at rock-bottom prices. All-you-can-

- Family restaurant specializing in continental cuisine. They aim to
be treated like a normal local bistro - the only difference is a
subtle lack of meat! Expect to pay #11.50 for a 3 course meal with
wine. Open Mon-Fri 6:30pm-11pm. Sat-Sun noon-11pm.

- Multi-award winning vegetarian Indian restaurant & take-away. An
extensive menu with something (surely!) for everyone. Prices very
reasonable. Open 12:30pm-3pm & 6pm-10pm. Closed Mon.

- Authenthic Indian food including many specialties. Mindbendingly

pots of tea! Not much vegan unless you book in advance, and you have
to double check the mince pies at Christmas, but the Chestnut and
Mushroom Pie has to be tried!!! Best carrot cake in Britain.
- It has just been awarded a * in Egon Ronay's guide, and is one of
only three places in Wales to be so highly recommended. (Apr.93)
