rec.food.veg World Guide to Vegetarianism
Part 8 of 9 - Europe
______________________________________________________________________

This guide contains a world list of vegetarian restaurants,
vegetarian-friendly restaurants, natural food stores, vegetarian
organizations, etc.

If you have any additions or corrections please e-mail them to
one of the below listed regional co-ordinators and/or myself.

** Format your corrections and new entries in the same format as **
** those in the listings. Keep comments and reviews short, simple, **
** and straight to the point. Explicitly specify any listings **
** which are to be removed. Correctly formatted updates will be **
** listed in the next release of the guide. Improperly formatted **
** and/or ciphered updates may never make it. **

Proper formatting will cut down on errors, save the co-ordinators
a lot of precious time, and thus allow the guide to be updated
quicker and released more frequently.

If you wish to become the editor of the listings for your area, please
contact me. I no longer have enough time to take care of all the
listings and would appreciate a few regional co-ordinators, especially
for geographical locations (i.e. large areas). Currently we have
the following regional co-ordinators:

USA:
California: Elliot Omiya <eom...@borland.com>
San Francisco Bay Area: Robert Blumen <rob...@brt.com>

Vancouver: Ted Altar <al...@sfu.ca>

Europe:

The rec.food.veg World Guide to Vegetarianism will be posted
occasionally. I no longer have the time to post it on a regular basis.
If you would like to take over, please contact me. If someone requests
listings for a given area, please feel free to post sections of the
guide in response. If the guide has not been posted in full for longer
than 3 weeks, then feel free to re-post complete parts of the guide or
the guide in full. You may post mail-server and/or FTP instructions
for obtaining the guide at any time.

Germany
______________________________________________________________________

| Germany has a chain of 'health food' stores called "Reformhaus". This
chain is not recommended though because the food is expensive and not
"biological" (i.e. comes from 'normal' farmers), and there's always a
| waste of packing material. Look for stores with `Bio-Laden' or
`Naturkostladen' in their names, they're usually better.

| There are several guides of vegetarian restaurants in Germany around.
| You should get them in almost every `Bio-Laden'.

Berlin
------

There are literally hundreds of health food stores in Berlin,
especially in districts like Berlin-Kreuzberg, where the `alternative
culture' is quite popular. There is a health food store or health food
restaurant on every other street corner.

There is also a wealth of vegetarian restaurants in Berlin. In
addition Indian restaurants and pizzerias usually serve several
vegetarian meals. There are numerous Indian restaurants in the center
of Berlin. It might help to have a look into the Yellow Pages under
the section `Gaststaetten'.

Vegetarian Restaurants:

Hakuin, Martin-Luther-Str. 1, 1000 Berlin 30
- Probably the most popular vegetarian restaurant in Berlin. It's
large and expensive. Someone said it has a `Buddhist image'.

Restaurant Thuernagel, Gneisenaustr. 57, 1000 Berlin 61 (Kreuzberg)
- Inexpensive, customers are mainly young people.

Restaurant/Cafe Tiago, Knesebeckstr. 15, 1000 Berlin 12 (Charlottenburg)
- Inexpensive, customers are mainly students from the nearby
university. Ex-`Baghwan' restaurant.

Simsalat, Ansbacher Str. 11, 1000 Berlin 30
| - Salad restaurant. Pay by weight. I don't know if it is good.

Hollyfood, Zossener Str. 61, 1000 Berlin 61 (Kreuzberg)
- Health food snack bar.

???, Mehringdamm 46, 1000 Berlin 61
- Health food shop with a snack bar. I have forgotten it's name, but
it's good.

Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:

Maharadscha, Fuggerstr. 21, 1000 Berlin 30
- Indian. Inexpensive. Central location.

Maharani, Fuggerstr. 18, 1000 Berlin 30
- Indian. Inexpensive. Directly opposite of Maharadscha, so if you
don't get a seat in one of them, just cross the road...

India Palace, Leibnizstr. 35, 1000 Berlin 12
- Indian. Very good vegetarian dishes; central location.

Tandoory, Prinz-Georg-Str. 10, 1000 Berlin 62
- Indian.

Katschkol, Pestalozzistr. 84, 1000 Berlin 62
- Afghan cuisine. Central location.

Cafe Campus, Str. des 17. Juni, 1000 Berlin 10 (ASTA-Villa, behind
Math-Dept)
- `Vollwertkost' and always some vegetarian dishes; customers are
mainly students and people working at the university.

Natural Food Stores:

???, Mehringdamm 46, 1000 Berlin 61

There are at least a dozen health food shops within walking distance
of Mehringdamm/Zossener Str./Bergmannstr.

Munich
------

Vegetarian Restaurants:

Cafe Gollwitz, Gollwitzerstr, D-8000 Muenchen. (MU-West, Naehe Mittlerer Ring)
- Viel Auswahl, sehr gutes Essen, Reservierung unverzichtbar.
- Wide choice, very good food, reservation absolutely necessary.
(Western Part of town, close to peripheral annular motorway.)

| Jahreszeiten Vollwert Restaurant, Sebastiansplatz 9
| - Excellent. Good variety for vegans, just ask. I would consider the
| food here to be "local" food.

| Restaurant Stefan, Adolf-Kolping-Strasse 14, in the Alpen Hotel

| Tofu Restaurant, Hernstrasse 11
| - Vietnamese. I think the place is completely vegan. Excellent.
|
| Keyno Vegetarishes Restaurant, Steinstrasse 42
| - Very good. A fair number of vegan items on the menu.
|
| Prinz Myshkin, Hackenstrasse 2
| - Good, but if you are vegan, be very explicit because they love to
| smother things in butter. I would consider the food here to be
| "local" food.
|
|
| Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
|
| Taverna Thessaloniki, Prielmayerstrasse 3
| - Greek.

Saarbrucken
-----------

Natural Food Stores:

Marga's Bioladen, Leitzweilerstr. 2, 06853-4423

Athens
------

| Eden, Flessa 3, in Plaka, right under Akropolis?
| - Vegetarian restaurant. Very nice and cheap. They have a ton of
| bizarre dishes. You could eat 3 meals a day there, for at least 3
| weeks, and never eat the same thing twice.

| Goody's, fast food chain
| - The Mexican salad w/o dressing is vegan. It has beans, lettuce,
| corn, radishes, and some other veggies.

| ______________________________________________________________________
|

Venice

If you cross over from the train station at the Rialto bridge, walk
through the main street vendors, take a left with the major traffic
(and more street vendors), and turn down the next side alley, there is
a Chinese restaurant which has many vegetarian dishes, including
stir-fried gnocchi, a Chinese/Italian treat that is not to be missed!

Netherlands
______________________________________________________________________

This is probably the only country in the world where McDonald's sells
a vegetarian burger. It's called the "Groenteburger" and it's
available at all of the 84 McDonald's restaurants in the Netherlands.
It is supposedly made of potatoes, peas, carrots, corn, onion, and
spices.

Amsterdam
---------

Tel: 020-626 1803
- A very pleasant restaurant which is almost totally vegetarian. Has
some vegan dishes.

Vegetarian guides are sold everywhere. ex: "Vegetarian Guide to the
Scottish Highlands and Islands", "Vegetarian London", etc.

There are several nationally-circulated vegetarian-oriented magazines
available in any big newsagents that have pages and pages of small
ads.

Wimpy, Burger King, and just about every restaurant chain except for
McDonalds serves a bean burger at its stores in the UK. Also, most
main-line railway stations have a "Casey Jones" burger shop in them,
selling "Mexican Bean Burgers", which are much the same thing again.

vegetarian cooking and continues to use only the best wholefood
ingredients. The wholemeal flour from which the breads, biscuits,
pastries, and cakes are freshly baked each day, is stone ground and
organically grown, as are many of the grains, seeds, and pulses.
Honey, molasses, and raw sugars are used for sweeteners, and all
eggs are free-range. All fresh fruit and vegetables are carefully
selected and whenever possible these are organically grown. We are
committed to using these ingredients with integrity to produce high
quality wholefood that is both natural and delicious. Cranks
restaurants and take-aways are built using natural materials and
hand-crafted objects which complement our food and make Cranks a
refreshing oasis in this busy world." Cranks are the UK Vegetarian
Society's first corporate members.

- Good vegetarian Indian (Gujerati) food. Cheap at lunchtime.

Suruchi, 14a Nicolson Street, Tel. 031-556 6583

Most vegetarians can and do eat in most restaurants. Restaurants
which don't serve any vegetarian food are few and far between, and
don't prosper, as far as I can see.
