I would like to announce the first Rlab Surface Mount Device (SMD) soldering class on Tuesday the 14th May to celebrate the new space and also feed the need for the TVRRUGrs SMD enthusiasm ;-)

This class was successfully alpha tested at SHH:

Here are some pics from the SMD event:

Here is what we built:

PiBot is designed to be a nice entry level introduction project for SMD assembly and you get to take away self built useful little Raspberry Pi experimenter addon.

Cost including PiBot parts and consumables is £10, we will provide tools although if you want to bring your own please do. We also would like you to donate to hackspace (Rlabs) for the use of their facilities and to support the community (suggest £5 or more).

I already have at least 8 TVRRUGrs expressing interest

Please respond here if you are interested.

regards
Al

And presumably we will be able to do it at the current space (if we haven't moved by then)..

Al

What time will this be happening on the 14th?  If evening then I'm game, my soldering skills definitely need work and I've need of SMD skills too.

"How do we book a space?"

For now just by replying here, we are also still awaiting confirmation as to venue around the move to Rlab (We might need to fall back to storage king which could limit numbers).

I've also added a placeholder event to the Rlab Google calendar (linked
from http://rlab.org.uk/wiki/Events ).

Are there any rlab tools, materials, etc you need for the class? Just in case we haven't found them yet.

The main rlab room is pretty clear. How do you want it set up ?

I can drop the 8ft table back down. There are loads of chairs there. How many ppl are confirmed attending?

Hi Guys

Well the stereo microscope is really handy for looking at one's handy work and visually checking for problems etc.. so if that's unpacked it would be useful.
We also need benches and tables to work on along with the brightest lighting we can muster, as well as some power blocks and extension leads, enough for all attending.

Everything else we will supply (Robin and I)

P.S. if anyone has tweezers please bring them along as we may need some extras

By the way investing in a quality pair of antistatic tweezers is a very good idea if you plan any SMD work, these can be had on ebay or dealextreme from china. However if you need a pair quickly I found a uk supplier:
I am sure there are others also.

A good hacker is never without his/her tweezers ;-)

What time should we be there? (Apologies if this was already
mentioned elsewhere, but I don't see it on the website).

Is this still a drop in type event, I'm not sure what my work commitment is this evening,
but would be keen to give it a go. (and also play with the kit, on my pi afterwards...)

Also, would it be possible to join the hackspace, pay subs get details etc... at the same time (this eve).
but I must say details on this seem quite sparse...

+1, awesome evening, thanks Alan.

Small request: For those of us who had to leave early, could you post details of where that wire goes ...

Thanks for the feedback folks, It was a privilege to fire off the 1st new event at our amazing new Rlab, great evening thanks for all of you making the effort to take part.

Andy the mod wire connects from pin 22 on the Pi GPIO header (before you add the female socket so its underneath it) which then connects to pin1 on IC4 IC4 is the adjacent chip and at right angles to the larger microcontroller chip (IC2).

We will be working on getting more documentation up this and next week in addition to the design files : http://www.solderpad.com/folknology/pibot/ will keep everyone in the loop via this thread.

regards
Al
