Hey all,

We'd like to get some of the building works complete at rlab this week so we can move in this weekend.

So, if anyone willing to volunteer could post their availability between now and wednesday next week, along with what you're most able to help with, lets find you something awesome and useful to do!

The key things that we need to do are:
1) Get the stairs moved
2) Finish richard's room
3) Move in to the main room upstairs and get the hackspace up and running again

In order to do this we need a LOT of help. We'd like to get the stairs moved tomorrow if at all possible, and this will require people who aren't afraid of a bit of construction. We're talking angle grinders, massive drills, welding and all sorts. If you have any of those sort of tools, please bring them to the space tomorrow night so we can hack together the stairs!

Also, safety equipment will be required for anyone on site for the open evening, so can someone get a big box of safety glasses and earplugs? If noone does I will, but I'm already a bit snowed under so please just let me know.

To finish Richard's room will require some lighter construction work. Plasterboarding and carpentry skills (door needs fitting) so anyone with experience in this please speak up!

As regards moving, we need to pack up at the old space by Friday. The crates are there and it's ready to go, it just needs people-power thrown at it. Lets call this a Thursday task.

So, lots to do, need as many hands as we can manage, there'll be plenty of cleanup and support to do as well so everyone's useful everywhere just shout if you're free!

Thanks,
R

Hi Ryan,

I can do some of Saturday/Sunday but won't be available Monday. I'm also available Wednesday this week and next :) Might be able to do Tuesday evening as well, but will need to check the car situation.

I can muck in one or two evenings this week (say, 18.00 onwards) at
the new site. I am mostly a mechanical numpty, but I'm good for a bit
of heavy lifting.

Hello!

On Friday evening, I'll be collecting a Luton van at about 5pm to move stuff from the old space to the new.

As I understand it (please feel free to correct it!), the stairs are being moved this evening and tomorrow, hopefully in time for the weekend to move everything upstairs.
The contents of the old space will be moved into the large room upstairs.

So, that means we need hands at the old space on Friday evening and Saturday morning to get stuff into the van, and as Ryan says, people to pack the stuff into crates on Thursday, without slowing down progress on the stairs at the new space.

So, if you're free on Friday evening or Saturday morning, let me know! I may even be able to collect you from South/East Reading (along the way from Europcar to Storage King) - again, let me know.

I also have to say that I've really enjoyed helping last weekend and yesterday, and that the work going into this is amazing!

Cheers,

Andy

I have a box of earplgus at home. I'll bring a generous handful with me
tonight.

There is a Screwfix near my work, I'll pop in at lunchtime and buy some
safety glasses. Do we just want whatever is cheapest? Are these
acceptable? http://www.screwfix.com/p/jsp-over-specs/70180 How many
pairs do we want? 10? 20?

Is the Three Tuns junction / Earley Gate of the Uni on that path? I
work at the University, but don't own a car... (Either that, or if
there's space in the back of the van for a bicycle, that'll work)

Hi All,
I now have hayfever meds and can function, I can pop down for a coupla hours this evening after that Im avaiable every evening till bedtime and the weekend. Would prefer to operate at new space, good at hammering and moving stuff.

What would be really cool is that in the to and froing someone can pick up at least the swivel bench chair, at best the dismantled workbench as the missus is getting tetchy! No probs if thats not doable yet.

Currently pre-rlab cards need re-authorising before they will work with
the new rlab lock. I think most people are aiming for evening, you may
need to check that the space will be open this afternoon.

Nobody complained, and the Bracknell store only had 11 of those safety
glasses in stock, so I bought 10 of them. I'll bring them tonight, along
with the earplugs.

I went along to Weldale street, but as Barnaby mentioned later, no-one was there to til the evening. In the meantime I cycled over to Woodley and packed up most of the loose stuff into the grey crates and marked them up on the tops with their contents.

The stack of boxes contain test equip, etc, a separate one on the floor has screws and bolts that may be needed for rlab building. A yellow one has soldering stations and stuff.

While there the KingSpace guy (Mark?) asked me to collect up the wire wall baskets and put them under the stairs, which I have done.

I have also taken down my IP camera, as rlab will have it's own more sophisticated system.

I understand that today, work will start in the evening too, as Tom is working elsewhere, and I was pleased to hear the agreement has now been signed.

Hello Ryan,

Thx, I am assuming that is 8pm. tonight:) and so no access during the day. A previous post said the Luton van will be available from 5pm tomorrow,

I estimate it will take 2 or 3 trips to clear the benches, tools and crates from Woodley and transfer them to Reading. The crates could be transported in cars, but the benches will need the van and some manhandling bodies.

Unfortunately I am not available Friday, but will be Sat morn.  I could take some crates over this (Thurs) afternoon if anyone is opening up C1 and there is space to drop them.

Hi Ryan,

Assuming that's me and not Paul H then yes, I have one of Barnaby's
cards that opens the door and am intending to go down to the new space
tonight and finish punching down the cabling now we have the rack up on
the wall.

I'm not sure what time I'm getting down there, I can let myself in so
could go down any time. My tools are still in the car from last night so
I could go straight from work and be there about 17:30 or 18:00 if other
people needed letting in to the building.

In fact, going down there earlier in the evening might be useful. I can
get all the cabling done and then go home and sleep. We were there quite
late last night!

I'm aiming to be at Storage King for around 6pm with the van, and will definitely be there Saturday morning. What sort of time do we want to start on Saturday?

I suggest we move benches and furniture first, so that we have places to put the other equipment when it arrives at the new space.

Hello Andy,

I am up for an early start on Sat, better for Reading traffic and it will allow time at rlab for those prepping the LASERs and Rockets for the evening. By early I would expect others would want to join us no earlier than 8am, and you will likely have had a late night Friday, if previous experiences apply.

-Mike.

P.S. I am thinking of doing a sponsor trawl before Sat, and would like to highlight the LASER show and what people might see in the sky on Saturday night as part of the rlab opening event. How should I describe it?

P.P.S. For those with posh phones, you can apparently 'check in' at rlab using Google when on site and it may boost the rlab Google-Love if you do.

Parking at rlab is has been very bad on Sat. mornings, but much better in the afternoon.

We might need some barriers or cones to stop parking. Though Friday may be an all nighter anyway!

Given the location near the town, I'd guess it's a random selection
of shoppers who've decided not to pay the parking fees in the car park
over the road. The auctioneers' customers are probably also a good
bet, as T&S have auctions of some kind every Saturday morning.

Might be worth an (empty) threat of unauthorised vehicles being
clamped? Cost is a couple of laminated A4 sheets and might discourage
people both on weekdays and weekends. We only need enough to encourage
people to use someone elses space?

I'd say we wait until we have the CCTV camera above the door up and
running. Then we can see if the people parking there are going to other
units, or going off for a few hours and coming back with shopping bags.

I agree that the situation can likely be worked amicably. Heaviest use us by our neighbour, but he has always been happy to move off. In some respects that is great cos he saved me a place. He also keeps an eye on stuff.

Most of the daytime and sat morn parking was from ed's garrage next door. He has now stopped blocking us in, now he knows we are active.
Ask there if a vehicle is blocking while they are open.
Outside of the garrages opening times it could be anyone.
Lets keep an eye on it for now and think about signs later.

I've decided what I'm doing now. I'll go to the new space straight from
work this evening, so should be there some time between 17:30 and 18:00,
depending on traffic.

I'm not going to be able to stay there all evening, but I'll connect and
test the rest of the ethernet cables, and maybe look at getting an
ethernet cable to the front door for the door box. I expect that would
take an hour or two, so I should be there until about 19:30 or 20:00.

If anyone wants to come down, bang on the door - which reminds me, we
need a doorbell!

FYI,

Richard was at C1 this afternoon, so I took 9 crates, (incl party lasers and soldering stations), and some stuff I had stored (RAID 19" cabinet, Silicon G-workstation, smoke machine & a screen) over.

I routed via the recycling centre to drop off a load of plasterboard and rubbish.

Given there will be a big crowd in town this weekend (bank hol and beer fest) it would be a shame not to take advantage of NOTAM and promo chance by shining, firing or whatever into the sky. I appreciate the focus is the build work, but promo chances are not at our dictate and this one should not be wasted.

If we can't get the lasers going by Sat maybe a Hollywood arc light could be hacked together. What do other think?

Andy's picking up two of us from the University at 5.30, so we've
got 3 bodies so far.

Hi David,

I'll be getting the van to the old space at about 6pm today, and then from 8.00am tomorrow.

In the unlikely event that we move everything tonight, I will post again when we're finished. I do say unlikely, so hopefully see you tomorrow morning, unless you can help this evening?

Cheers!

Andy

I'm keen to come visit the space and lend a hand. Thinking Sunday afternoon or during the day on Monday. Will people be about then?
