About 23 years ago, visually offended at the sight of ugly hardware
hanging out of our beautiful sailplane wings, I began thinking how to
avoid it. The concept of a rotating shaft with its end bent, running
into a slot in a moving surface, such as an aileron, came to mind.

After 13 years of dabbling with different mechanics that didn't work
well, in 1999 I connected with Kimbrough Products, the RC car gear
people, to produce an injection molded coupler that would secure the
shaft directly to splined servo output gears.
It's called it the Rotary Driver System or RDS. I've installed it in
about 3 dozen of my scratch-built Genie sailplanes. It works. Details
are in File A6 of my website,
http://www.geniebuild.com/harleys_genie.html An easily made little
mockup is shown that demonstrates how it works.

Wings are totally clean, prettier, quieter and perform to their maximum
potential, but the system has not gotten into general use. Among the
reasons is that most guys are flying ARF's which have pre-made servo
wells that defeat doing a proper RDS installation.

I made one of the mockups for Dieter Mahlein of ShredAir fame and gave
it to him up on Eagle Butte in the Tri-Cities. A few days ago I got an
e-mail from him. Below, I'm quoting an excerpt from it.

"I appreciate your contributions to RC Groups and especially to the
modeling community world-wide. When you made an RDS mock-up for me about
10 years ago, the materials hadn't caught up to the concept yet, and I
let your mock-up gather dust.

Fast-forward to today, and guess what? I'm just now translating a report
from the world's largest F3B contest held earlier this year in Germany.
The author points out that in the highly-refined competition machines
which F3B gliders have become, RDS has all but replaced conventional
linkages. And F3B is to soaring what Formula-1 is to driving. Which
means, RDS will find its way into mainstream models./"

This got me thinking about how to simplify the mechanics and making it
easier to install in mainstream models. A concept came to mind that gets
completely away from dealing with multiple brands and sizes of splined
output gears, trimmed down output wheels, etc. For more information

post (#18) on page 2. It contains a drawing and comment about the new
mechanics.

Help is needed! Who of you can influence a servo maker to offer an
interchangeable output gear for their existing servos that are suited to
RDS use?

Thank you Harley for your efforts.

I just recently received a new Vandal DLG with a 4 servo wing setup with
RDS.

Geoff Jones build great models and the workmanship is very impressive.
The RDS is all completed, just drop in my servos.

Another RCG thread, www.rcgroups.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1019982&highlight=rds that did a very good job of looking at and showing the workings, hardware, and issues involved with some of the newer F3B ships that are using RDS for ailerons. I have a Ceres Lift which has these new RDS system that comes with pockets built in and ready for a yoke, which in my case I used an aftermarket one to do the job. The tightness of these surfaces are unbeliveable and some of the really radical guys are building wings completely sealed from the molds with all ailerons contained, completely smooth surfaces. My luck I would build one and the darn servo would not work.

Yap, Harley sterted something here and he contiues to think into the future with it, and from what I am seeing, so are others.
