I've subscribed to some YouTube channels for close to 10 years, probably have 20-30 channels related to cycling in my subscription list, and have watched probably 1,000+ videos, some I've watched 20x.  I watched this one tonight, it is in my top 3 of all time.  So much to fall in love with.  It really spoke to me in terms of how cycling can break down barriers and connect people, while promoting so much positivity.  I'm Canadian.  I've been to the US maybe 20-30x.  I've been to Minneapolis at least 5x (many years ago, for work), I can see what it usually ranks highly as a bike-friendly city.

Hey Jay,

Thank you very much for the link to that video. It spoke to me for the very same reasons you illuminated, and I can certainly understand why it is one of your favorites!

After the video ended, I noticed another of BikeFarmer's videos in which he explained why he was closing up shop. I really enjoyed his passionate, articulate account of where his  9-year journey as a bikeshop owner has taken him. Although this quote is out of context here, it really struck a chord with me, and it speaks to an ethos familiar to the Riv community.

"Nobody wants to be forced to become a different version of themselves simply to enjoy something as beautifully freeing as a bike ride."

If you haven't watched this particular video, I encourage you to do so to enjoy the full import of these words. 'Gib' is an interesting dude who has crafted a vision of bicycle utility and seems to live it.

Cheers, John

I’ve watched many of his videos and quite like his style.

That’s a great quote you shared.  It’s the kind of quote where you form an initial impression, and the more you think about it the more you expand its meaning for you.

While I liked the vibe of the Minneapolis video, I’m a small to medium suburb guy so it’s hard to relate.  Funny thing is it makes me want to take my bike on the commuter train into the city to see what I’m missing.

Also, looking forward to your Top 10 list of 'All-time Favorite Cycling videos'. With more than 1000 videos watched, I feel you'd be just the guy to recommend my next cycling video.

Cheers, John

Jay, thanks for the link to Bike Farmer's video.  I live in Minneapolis and like to ride the greenway a lot. He has a riv all rounder  and he did a video at riv HQ.

John - getting it down to 10 will be a challenge.  Also, some are a series on someone's channel with multiple videos.  I'll sprinkle some of my favs as I remember them.

Years ago, when I had a skinny tire road bike and whatever aluminum cx bike at the time (had many, can't recall what was in the stable at the time), I came across the channel "Henrywildeberry".  Have watched all the videos, the ones in the first five years at least a handful of times each.  I really liked his initial bike build series: https://youtu.be/Ll24o94lnzA?si=UC5F-e7k57VXREPk.  Those videos go back 8 or more years, and his channels was one of the earliest I got glued to.  Hopefully this link worked, I have a really old mac computer and I don't often post links.

Another older one is "DKlein" / "Everything's Been Done".  I really liked the ride videos with friends, and the OMTM rides.  I couldn't find the exact video that had my burst out laughing, but in one video a guy opens a pouch of tubeless darts, and the comment was about him bringing "calligraphy nibs", which they looked like lol.  Here is one video I enjoyed https://youtu.be/SmXuCkE3Ofw?si=-0Ode_U1ujZbZ8rH

More to come!

Andy Quandt aka Bikefarmer is great fun to watch. He also owns two Rivendells an earlier 26” All Rounder and a Roaduno

I don't know if it has been discussed previously on the RBW list but my fave youtube bike channel is Probably Riding. Lots of Rivendell and alt bike content, extremely chill vibes. Highest recommendation.

From the exact same mold and clearly under direct influence of Probably Riding, Bikes, Books & Buildings is also worth checking out:

Agreed, Derek. Probably Riding is a good channel, but he seems to be doing more and more sponsored videos hawking adventure cameras and whatnot. I stumbled into the Bikes, Books, & Buildings channel a few months back. It's not bad, but nearly an exact copy of Probably Riding, which feels weird.

I'm a fan of Tim Fitzwater's channel here: https://youtu.be/BI3U-DDuezY?si=oGtoA1Thpc6HxVlU
He's located in Ohio and does a lot of the same type of riding that my friends and I do in Indianapolis. Industrial gravel, light trespassing type gravel, S24O's, and touring videos. He doesn't try to sell you anything, but does have some of his own merch. He's also a photographer and has a channel dedicated to that, which is cool. Pretty down-to-earth guy and worth a visit.

Books Bikes & Buildings is awesome. Cut the guy some slack, would you rather him riding around with the camera on his face talking into it for most of the ride like so many other biketoobers? Not if you come for the bikes, books and building of Olso Norway. And he's smart and thoughtful with the voiceovers.

I wasn't trying to give Bikes, books...a hard time; it's just nearly a carbon copy of Probably Riding's videos, no way around that. Still interesting, not necessarily a bad thing, but it's stylistically very close to the early Probably Riding work. Also, this is just my opinion, and who cares about my opinion?

It’s worth mentioning that Probably Riding and BBB have both acknowledged each other in their videos and have praised the other’s work. Marcus (PR) has also repeatedly encouraged others to follow in his footsteps - simply record your rides then narrate them later. It’s an extremely easy way to get rolling and there are MANY folks doing this on YouTube, pick whomever speaks to you!
Peace,
Derek Z

Here's another good one: Traveling Thru.  https://youtu.be/kU9sTogjDko?si=RcsF-phdTxEtAySi
This channel has tons of bikepacking and other interesting rides and doesn't seem to be trying to sell anything.

One of my all time favorite Riv focused videos is this one. I laugh so hard because it still rings true today https://www.instagram.com/reel/CrycHsdpTVe/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

If you're at all interested in San Francisco Bay Area rides, watering holes, or history (especially counter-culture), be sure to check out the bikeeveryhood channel - he does a great job with his videos, and has good taste in music. Here's a recent one:

Slin,

I'm so glad someone else on this list loves that video as much as I do. Probably my most shared video when it comes to Riv.

Cheers
