I'm still looking for the perfect go-everywhere bag. Something with a
classic style (leather?), a solid strap for carrying off the bike, and
some means of attaching to the bike so it isn't on my back when I
ride.

Last year VO had a front bag made completely out of leather for a
sample. Maybe you could see if it's available.

How big? For small, rugged and manly, with nunnathose un-virile features like tweed panels and brass hardware, take a look at the OutYourBackDoor Manpurse and Multipurpose Bag (names from memory, probably faulty), both being re-purposed army surplus from 1950s south Croatian or east Estonian artillery dragoon units (or something).

Go to the website to see the things. These bags are cheap (sub $60 IIRC with all the various trimmings) and the larger Multi carries my netbook and (tight) a standard letter size yellow pad and work papers. I adapted it myself to my Fly rack, but Jeff Potter (seller) will hook it up for rack and should use together.

How about a Nitto rack with a Wald basket and a Sackville ShopSack?

If price point is not a serious issue, try Guu-Watnabe in Tokyo:

http://www.guu-watanabe.com/english.htm

Bags can be purchased via paypal

Some models available through wallbike.com

From what I know, the shop can pretty much draw up your custom dream
bag (send them drawings).

Acorn out of CA makes great bags and they have a handlebar bag that
affixes to the bar and you can purchase a shoulder strap for off bike.

Also check out the new Devon panniers by Brooks. Quite expensive (280
pounds for one). But looks like it might fit the bill, with a change
of the handle on top to a longer strap. Which am guessing is an easy
swap.

I personally like the look of the Carradice Bike Bureau. But maybe
not upscale enough in looks? http://tinyurl.com/y8pm2su

I have always loved my Carradice barley bag. made a facebook album
called "Whats in my barley bag?", to show the amazing packing
abilities. Looks good on the bike and if you add the quick release
attachment it can go with you,

It looks like that page requests that viewers log in. I might suggest
Flickr.com as an alternative (or picasa, etc. - just happen to like the
Flickr interface better), which can share photos with no login.

I don't think this precisely fits the bill, but I did want to make a
quick plug for Adam over at Zugster Bags. His queue can be similar to
a custom frame at times, but his work is excellent. The reason I
mention this is from an image he posted this weekend -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/aalpern/4106703347

It's an "in the wild" photo of this bag, I think -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/aalpern/4064339425

and it's different enough from the Nigel Smythe, Sackville and BrandV
designs to be complimentary.

Also, it looks like the Nitto Mini Front racks are back in stock as of
this weekend.

I have to second CF's feedback on Adam's bags. Really great stuff.

That is a ridiculously sweet bag. Certainly dead-on in terms of
looks. Despite the lack of pannier hooks, I'd consider Adam were it
not for his wait list. He should raise his prices, in my opinion.

As a self-promotional addendum, I'm going to be doing my own small
production run of waxed cotton musettes for the holidays. Email me if
you're interested. And apologies if this is inappropriate use of the
forum. I'm fine if this message gets deleted.

But here's an update on my project:

coming in lates January.

I use a Filson small field bag as a handlebar bag:

http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092393&cp=2065674.2065687.2065708&parentPage=family

I take the shoulder strap off and stash it in the bag and use velcro
strips from the hardware store to lash the bag to my noodle bars. I
loop the velcro through the brass rings that the shoulder strap
usually clips to. It has a nice leather handle on top for carrying
into the store, or I can put the shoulder strap back on and use it as
a field bag. The only downside is that it's on the smaller side.

Nice! Here's a link to a Filson Refab post on AC by another cyclist
who retrofit a small shoulder bag as a front handlebar bag:

http://www.archivalclothing.com/2008/12/refab-filson-small-field-bag.html

I do wish Filson would make some bike luggage.
