Hi RBW,

I've finally put the finishing touches together, so here's a link to a few photos of my 68 cm Bombadil. Scroll through to see some photos of Cat's 54 cm Homer. You'll also find a couple of traditional GGRBWOB full-frame, drive-side shots for your enjoyment!

The Bombadil is great. So far it's only really been used for commuting, although we plan to tour on these bikes. Such a nice ride, it feels stable but not in the least bit slow. I weigh 100–110 Kg, and the most I've loaded it up with would be about 12 Kg (some in basket, some in SaddleSack) so far, and there wasn't the slightest problem. There was no difference in handling that I could detect. I can't wait to put some more Kms on it!

I'd like to thank the list members whose bikes have inspired these builds. In particular, the photos and descriptions of Amit's, Kelly's, René's and a couple of other Bombadils on Flickr whose parentage I'm not certain of have been most helpful.

Cheers!

Tom

Great bike.
Love the pictures of Cat with the Bombidil.
That's one big bicycle!

Yes, because this one is clearly inadequate, you oughta be ashamed!

Jokes aside, have you (or has anyone else) had problems with tall, heavy bikes, carrying bags and/or baskets loads, toppling over on kickstands? I was planning to put one of the two-leggers on my Bomba, but I'm not sure whether it will hold it...

I've found that a cheap, Greenfield rear-dropout stand works better with heavy rear loads, even assymetrical loads, than any Pletscher or Velo Orange 2-leg stand.

Trikes work better than the Greenfield.

I've got a single leg Pletscher on my AHH, it's really not adequate when I load up my trunksack.  Next Riv order will include a two-legger.

But Tom the new one is bigger, and different tubes, and and I'll think of some more excuses soon.

I have mixed feelings about the Pletscher 2-legger. It's definitely more stable than a 1-legger but both my wife and I tend to put too much confidence in it, and both of our bikes (Hilsen and Betty) have fallen over several times while on the stand. I understand the falling over when it's asymmetrically loaded but both bikes have gone over while unloaded from front wheel flop. I recently took the 2-legger off my bike to avoid more unnecessary falls. A bike can't fall over if it's laying on the ground.

My usage issues aside... the 2-legger is a beautiful piece of machinery.

With the bike built up & especially the rack, the tentacular stays
blend right in & don't call attention to themselves. It'll take
serious bike nerds to even notice.

I use a single leg on my 58 cm Atlantis & have to be careful when I
have bags on the rear. With front low riders and a stuffed handlebar
bag it's OK. But 58 isn't overly tall either.

I tried a clickstand a while back, & it really works well but is a bit
of a nuisance to use. A couple of my touring buds have the rear
triangle mount single leg & they seem pretty good.

Saw a guy about your size in Europe who had a similar sized bike,
fully loaded, 4 bags + h'bar bag + stuff strapped to the rear rack.
He had rear mount single leg PLUS a single leg coming off the front
low rider rack.
