So anybody got a list up and running???

I'm hoping to get over my IT band pain in my left leg which limits my mileage.  Went to sports medicine on Thurs and they have me on a stretching & strengthening regimen so will see how that works.  They recommended a bike fit, but I'm kinda' relucatant to do that as they all are into the racey-bars 10cm below the saddle thing... any recommendations for SoCal fit specialists?

I also want to get up to Big Bear and the surrounding mountains and ride more trails.  My All-Rounder does a great job up there, but man it sucks seeing the paint getting dinged up.  Off-road riding is tough on a bike!

I'm also hoping to keep my job... will know by March 15th which is the date for educators in CA to know if they're being laid off or not.  Will see how that works out... the wife and I are both employed by the same school district so could be an unhappy spring in the Cyclotourist household.

Maybe if that works out I can justify getting a dedicated mountain bike (Bombadil or possibly a Bob Brown custom if I go crazy).

And on that note, a happy New Year for all:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4233455133/

I'll definitely do another super rando series and a few S24Os. I was
hoping to do a 1200k but the two that are in my area of the country
happen in June when I'll be using vacation time to head out of the
country with family. I'll also do a couple of 300k rides on my own,
not officially sanctioned brevets or anything. And if everything works
out I'll do the Seattle International Randonneurs 3 Volcanos 300k in
August. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to get a hall pass from my wife
and go away for 3 or 4 day tour in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest
but I'm not too hopeful.

I've got money tucked aside and will definitely be adding another bike
to the quiver. I'll probably also sell a bike (my Rambouillet) just to
keep things at 3 for total number of bikes. But we'll see.

I intend to read a lot more this year and spend less time on the
interweb.

It just occurred to me that I don't own a Rivendell anymore, so if
business is good in 2010, it seems only reasonable to buy a Roadeo.

Other goals in no particular order:
1. Ride from DC to Richmond to attend NAHBS next month. I'm planning
to ride my 84 Stumpjumper fixed-gear.
2. Organize several gravel road day-tours.
3. Do a weeklong tour with friends, as many gravel roads as we can
find.
4. Maybe some brevets - low priority right now.
5. Lotsa S24O, probably several with my 4yo on our tandem.
6. Train to Winona, ride back to Minneapolis in one day.
7. Take more pictures!
8. Almanzo 100

I'd love to be able to say I put more miles on my bike than car, but I
have to include touring miles to do so: seems like cheating on that
one. And I'm not good at record keeping :). Goals to accomplish:
1. Pass my next stress echo (blew off the doc until I return from
Vietnam)
2. Ride from Pamplona to Santiago de Compestella, Spain (tour in the
advanced planning stages)
3. Build a rear wheel for the Guerciotti I've been
resurrecting......forever.
4. Post pics on cyclofiend's site.
5. Drag my touring buds off the pavement & into S24Os.

Thill's list is remarkably similar to mine.
I'm making a postcard for the Almanzo 100 tonight, having missed the
very short window to get into the Ragnarok 105 (both gravel races, for
the non-locals).
Another Winona train trip
At least one bike/camping trip (this has been on my list for 3 years now)
More long weekend rides to interesting destinations.

your post is so right on. i didn't ride a lot until the mid '80's, but
i attended "cal" from '69-'73 and owned a peugot( sorry for the
misspelling, but that bike was truly forgettable ). the simplex
equipment on that bike was just a joke. i am sorry if this offends
some people, but today's medium priced equipment is far superior than
anything in the 70's or 80's, period. and i love and ride lugged steel
bikes.

(2) Do most of a brevet series with the idea of being fit enough to do a complete one in 2011 and maybe even think about PBP.

(3) Sort out my &*^ hamstring and knee issues to make all of the above possible.

(4) Do more S240s and mini 2-3 day tours in the region.

Don't buy or sell any more bikes (unless that perfect mint-condition
Mercian comes along).
Maintain better overall fitness throughout the year.
Read more; watch TV less.
Get handier with basic maintenance of my own bikes.
Ride at least one century.
Do TOMRV (Tour of the Mississippi River Valley).
Do 3-4 days of Ragbrai with my Twin Cities friends.
Organize another four-day tour of the George Mickelson Trail in South
Dakota (Black Hills area)
Ride with my wife more often.
Ride to work at least twice a week for at least seven months of the
year.
Don't worry; be happy.

2. ride a 200k brevet - either by myself or with the girl on the tandem
3. settle on a backup bike - even if it is fancy and nice
4. finish making a set of bags for our bikes
5. ride more miles this year than last year - 1858 miles this year but
I had 2 months off due to injury and recovery time sucked so I'd like

6. don't have any injuries that require not riding a bike.

david,
i struggled with IT band issues earlier this year, and it was only
after i figured out my saddle
was too HIGH that it started clearing up. the IT band stretches have
helped too.
i went to see a doc about it, and he put me on anti-inflammatory meds
for 2 months and had me back off on the hills until i was better.
that said, my saddle being too high was the culprit.
good luck getting that pain to go away!

The GAP is a very well maintained, well drained, wide, relatively smooth
path. I saw exactly 1 pothole on my trip from McKeesport to Cumberland.
The C&O Towpath by contrast can turn into a sea of mud with washouts.
the surface is very rough and in some places it is double track with a
20-30 foot drop-off into the canal only a few inches from where you're
riding. The GAP is a bike trail, the C&O Towpath in some places is
virtually mountain biking.

2009 was not a banner year for me. It brought me my second cataract
surgery (the first eye was done in 2008), detached retinas in both
eyes, then the growth of scar tissue over my left retina that required
invasive surgery for removal. The vision in my left eye may never be
completely right again. Add in family obligations, a couple of
business trips, a week's vacation with my wife, passing a stone on
Pearl Harbor Day (OW-OW-OW-OW-OW!) with subsequent UT infection, and a
cold and I haven't ridden 200 miles total since October. Plus, my
best buddy/riding partner of the last twenty years has just moved out
of state. I'll miss my regular rides with him in the coming year.

My cycling-related goals for 2010 are:
To get back on the road starting tomorrow
To start commuting again once weather permits
To get back enough fitness to hang with the local cycling club
To get fit enough to handle a full century (for the first time in 15+
years!)
To join the NorCal Riv/Kogswell riders for a Marin mixed terrain ride
To explore the unpaved roads in the Stanislaus river canyon between
Columbia and Twain Harte
To sell off a couple of bikes that aren't being ridden, and ride the
heck out of the ones I keep!

Happy New Year and good health to all!

Well, my list will probably hurt Jim (he's my LBS) -
1. No bike purchases. Bought 3 last year. Got rid of same amount.
So net gain was zero. But with these, am pretty well set for the long
term.
2. Finally (hopefully) drop that last 10 pounds. To make the weight
loss an even 150.
3. Make the transition to wearing XL clothing. (see above). Hey, not
much for most. But (not so) big for me.
4. More S24Os. Did 3 last year. Would like to do 4 Maybe find a
second place to camp.
5. Try a weekend tour. Hard to do with work/music obligations.

(BTW, #3 is actually Riv-related. Grant explained to me the extra
cost of making XXL clothing and the minimum orders required. Want to
give him less of a reason to order those items.)

There are others goals out there. But not Riv (or bike) specific.

1. Slow the **#$&# down! Now that it is cold, I find that I must force myself to go slowly (~15 mph) for the first 10 miles, otherwise I feel miserable and hate riding. To extend this pattern so that riding becomes less of a competition with self.
2. Keep bike miles (75% commuting type riding -- tho' I work at home) at least as high as what I put on either of my cars (have part custody of busy 8-year-old daughter and run all errands for 86 year old mother). The new DN72 on the Motobecane and the soon to come, I hope, SON20R for the Riv commuter should make this easier.
3. Some longer rides, starting, I hope, with another mass communal NM iBob ride here in Albuquerque, once it warms up a bit; perhaps in the mountains.
4. When my new 17/20 Dingle arrives, try riding to The Peak. (46X20X24.5" 571 wheel = 56", Riv gofast).
5. Just maybe, join a northern NM organized tour.

I put thousands of miles on plastic Simplex derailleurs almost 40 years ago and, no problems.

As for to do lists, good for some. I find them constraining. I've no
car and flying hurts my ears (maybe the 787 with its higher cabin
pressure will make a difference), so the bikes will play a big role in
whatever I do.

Perhaps my goal this year will be to not have a truck destroy my
Retrotec as happened last year.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential but if you insist.
Well now, let me begin.......
.......I would like to obtain a Son 28 Mavic A719 wheel to match my
current rear wheel along with the appropriate front and rear light so
that I may commute 40 miles RT to work in the dark. At the same time,
I would like to avoid exacerbating an injury that has been nagging me
for about a year. Stretching and more core training should help me to
avoid injury but who really enjoys doing that.
In addition, I would like to convert my single speed parts to a new
steel frame and look forward to seeing what exactly Grant offers later
in the year. Hopefully an affordable, versatile frame that can take a
load and nothing too lightweight or I'll have to look elsewhere.
Aside from the material goals, I would like to do as others and lose
some more fat but doing that has to be fun or forget it. This may mean
taking some weekend rides and camping. I would also like to take more
photos on rides and socialize with more people when riding although
that has been and elusive goal every year that I make it. I usually
end up riding alone on group rides and I have become tired of paying
$25 to punish myself for 50 miles in exchange for bruised bananas and
stale crackers mixed with Gatorade. This year I plan on a more
practical approach to my riding and look forward to building my racks
for my main ride so that I may carry more things when necessary. Group
rides.......I don't know that I'll do them anymore.

My list is the same as Anne's except I can't buy anything when I visit
Rivendell because I already have a new bike in production. Maybe I
can at least ride a Rodeo.......

Regarding fit- If you can get a copy of the Selle Anatomica saddle co.
guidelines it will help.
It is very detailed and addresses most issues if your frame is close
to correct size.
Takes a little patience and perhaps a few component switches but it is
well worth it.
I have eliminated all neck and shoulder problems with a few
adjustments.

I haven't yet; perhaps it's an unhealthy mixture of pride and naivete that makes me think of doing it. I've never ridden the crest route, and I know it is much steeper than Tramway, but i have done Tramway in a 75" gear, albeit with a nice tailwind. 70" is easy enough. So, I thought gearing down 20% might get me, if painfully and slowly, up to the crest.

Anyone familiar with this climb, please chime in with comments -- perhaps I need to change the ring out, too to, say, a 42.

my goals for 2010:

1. enjoy my days, regardless of what they bring, work-wise or other-
wise.
2. leave the car parked in the drive, even more than i did in 2009
3. do a century ride, as all my rides in 2009 were shorter
4. do my first S240 ride, and then another one
5. eat good food, drink good wine and coffee, drink more water
6. spend more time with family and friends, cause life is short
7. figure out how to sleep past 3 a.m.

The C&O is flat, straight and not very interesting riding. (And when we did it in 2006, it was in rough shape in some stretches.

The GAP offers varied terrain, beautiful scenery, and nice places to stop along the way.

If you have the time, I'd recommend riding from Pittsburgh to DC in 4 or 5 days.

Cheers,
Sean

My group started in McKeesport. I don't believe the section between
there and Pittsburg is really finished yet.

You have the choice of riding west to east, where the first 120 miles or
so are all uphill, but very gentle, followed by what feels like a
screaming 25 mile steep downhill between the Eastern Continental Divide
and Cumberland; or a tough 25 mile climb followed by an almost
imperceptible downhill for the remaining 120 or so.

I liked the GAP a lot, and will be happy to do it again in 2010.

Sorry, I live in Pittsburgh, and the tendency here is to refer to any city within 25 miles of Pittsburgh as "Pittsburgh"..

We started at Little Boston. Did overnight stays in

Confluence, PA
Cumberland, MD
Hancock, MD
Harper's Ferry, WV

That route gives you 60 - 70 miles per day.

Would do it again for sure.

Cheers!

Far more ambitious than our group. We stayed at West Newton (the first
day was very short because it took so long to get to McKeesport - 3 hrs
just to go from McKeesport to the Pittsburg Airport to turn in the
rental van, then taxi back to McKeesport), Ohiopyle and Myersdale. My
trip ended in Cumberland, but the rest of the group went on to do the
Canal. I'm not sure where they stayed.

My maximun day was around 45 miles. Of course, a day and a half of that
was in pouring down rain, which definitely makes the distance seem a lot
longer.

We did the whole trip in September and it was Raining for at least two full days.
2 guys from DC, 2 of us from Pittsburgh, and one friend who flew out from Denver.

The guys from DC drove up in a rental car which we returned the night before.

At the end of the ride, we rode our bikes straight out to the airport and picked up a rental minivan for a one-way trip back to Pittsburgh. The evening was spent telling tales and downing ales in Suburban DC before the drive home.

It is a great ride. I didn't have a Riv, but Riv supplied my MUSA, wool gear, water bottles, Nitto Racks, Pasela Tourguards, and philosophy.

:)

Yes, I've made my Goals for 2010 official ... or at least I posted
them on our website, which basically means I better follow through
with my plans:

http://www.renaissancebicycles.com/2010/01/a-new-year-a-new-goal

In fact, my goals aren't too different from most ... just that I have
associated a desire to do more quality riding with a numerical goal.
Really, it is all about enjoying my time on the bike.

One goal for 2010: FINALLY put my Bleriot together. Have all the
bits-- now just need the time. I now understand how people end up with
NOS/ NIB components from decades past.

Cheers!
