I am having a problem running a backup on one of my databases, i
mentioned this before but didn't follow it up (sometimes it works,
sometimes not, there is no pattern to it).

I suppose now is the time to make sure there isn't a bug before 2.0 goes
to production.

I am trying to find the same point in time in the log files, but they
are pretty large and i'm still looking at the moment.

My other less active/smaller databases seem to backup fine.

This was an incremental backup (first one), however previously i was
doing full backups but had the same problem.

This is probably quite important now too, i lost a couple of days worth
of data last week due to the backups failing intermittently.

Tried backing up with 2154, same error message.

One thing i did notice was that i had to copy the
Raven.Abstractions.dll to the backup folder for it to work, is that how
it should be, probably not related but worth mentioning.

Any ideas on what's up with my backups, i can't seem to get 1
successful backup at the moment which is a cause for concern.

I have tried from the command line and in the management studio, both
error with the same problem.

Thanks!

Can you add the full log for the error?

I managed to get a full backup to complete, however it was just after
it upgraded all my indexes and there was no activity on my database.

Tried to run another backup just and it failed at the same point as
before, this time my database was very active.

Not had chance to switch my site offline just yet to test the backup,
it's a pretty busy period at the moment.

Log file is available here:
http://www.house-mixes.com/logs/2012-11-28.rar

Timestamp of the error is around 12:02:02.

Are you sure that you are using the latest version?

The only relevant errors I see there is already covered:

if (success == false)
{
// 'The system cannot find the file specified' is explicitly ignored here
if (Marshal.GetLastWin32Error() != 0x80004005)
throw new Win32Exception();
sourceFilesSnapshot[index] = null;

i'm positive this is 2160 version.

Do i need to add the Raven.Abstractions.dll file into the backup.exe
directory...well i have to at the moment for it to even start.

Well it definitely wont start unless this DLL is there in the same
directory.

I just tried again, took 2 hours to fail this time, but still with the
same error.

One thing i noticed while it was running, and i'm not sure if this will
degrade performance or not.... the Raven/Backup/Status document is
updated literally every half a second or less, the document was about
2.5mb at the point of failiure, is opening/saving this document
frequently a bad idea or is it not worth worrying about.

Hm...
You are probably right, I'll take a further look there.

I just tried again, took 2 hours to fail this time, but still with the same error.

One thing i noticed while it was running, and i'm not sure if this will degrade performance or not.... the Raven/Backup/Status document is updated literally every half a second or less, the document was about 2.5mb at the point of failiure, is opening/saving this document frequently a bad idea or is it not worth worrying about.

FYI i ran another backup attempt last night, disabling indexing for the
last part of it.

It got past the point of failure from last time, but was far too slow
to let it continue....9 hours in and it was only just copying the 5th
out of 36 indexes files to the backup directory.

The Raven/Backup/Log file was 3.6mb in size and was noticeably slower
updating than it was at the beginning of the backup, i'm not sure if
this is the reason for slow down but it appears that way.
