Best practices for bundles & triggers

As far as I can see, triggers are run synchronously when the operation they intercept is performed (i.e. an AbstractDeleteTrigger).
Should bundles perform side-effect updates on an async task rather than synchronously with the operation? I can see how the bundle might need to wait on an index, or perform more complex operations and cause the main operation to take longer than needed...
thoughts?
