snapshots from San Francisco Randonneurs' 200k "Lighthouse" brevet yesterday
Yesterday the San Francisco Randonneurs ran an out-of-season edition of the traditional January "Lighthouse" 200k brevet. Like most SFR rides, its start and finish controls are at the Golden Gate Bridge. Every time I do one of these rides, which begins and ends with a ride across the bridge, I fall in love with the bridge a... more »

Inspirational randonneur injured at home
Seattle randonneur and adventure cyclist Pat Rodden was recently injured, not on his bike, but in a terrible accident inside his house. Pat has done PBP twice and he is one of the original Seattle International Randonneurs. However, he is probably best known for a bicycle trip he did to the Arctic in 2006. Pat’s trip journal is... more »

Carbon fork and/or handlebar for tandem?
My wife & I purchased a steel Co-Motion tandem this summer. It has a steel fork. I know carbon is lighter but would we see other benefits going to carbon fork and/or handlebars? Input appreciated.

Physician accused of deliberately injuring two bicyclists is convicted
It looks like the bikes won one in LA of all places. [link] We even got this article on how to drive your car safely with bikes! [link] I don't expect major changes, but I do appreciate the small steps... more »

Par Lay Voo?
A recent post to this list (DrCodfish, pjinoakvi...@comcast.net) suggested that folks interested in PBP could spend time now practicing French. I took French in high school, but that was it. Several years ago I decided that it was pretty silly to be "sort of familiar" with French, so I decided to start doing at least a little something in French most... more »

Schmidt SON20R feedback wanted
After finding LED headlights that offered such an increase in lighting over even dual halogens, I'm switching over to LEDs. What made me hesitate was the color and quality of LED lights. With my older eyes, I really liked the Halogen lighting better and couldn't really see as well by LED lights. My eDeluxe makes... more »

Cap/Hats!
Dear Randons: I've got this really thin "Wigwam" branded knit cap (mostly wool, I believe) rom REI a year or so back. It's great for an under the helmet wear down to about 40 degrees F or so. Below that, I'd picked up a much finer, thicker woven merino wool cap at the "Express" company's winter... more »

SR Award Application Deadline, Saturday!
Don't forget, the deadline to apply for the SR Award is midnight on Saturday. Don't ask me what time zone, or how this interacts with daylight savings time :-) I'll be out there trying to get in a last-day-of-October R-12 ride. Nick

Camelbak flow meter
I had been thinking this morning that one of of the biggest problems with using a Camelbak instead of bottles is running out of water from not knowing how much is left. This should theoretically solve that problem, although I expect a loop of extra tubing may be required to make the gizmo readable.... more »

Wind article from RBR
An interesting article on wind and riding in today's RBR newsletter. There is usually something in each issue that I find interesting (though they dropped my favorite section (racing roundup) and kept that stupid Scott's Spin section) and today there was the article below. You can sign up to get the newsletter... more »
