Reflective tape

I've been thinking about painting the frame of my Schwinn Varsity beater/commuter bike with reflective paint, especially as I work Third shift. Anybody tried that?

Yes. I rattle-canned an old mtn bike frame and used a can of reflective paint meant for mailboxes as the topcoat. I liked the results, thought that it reflected quite well after I put a few coats on, but, once I put a few reflective stickers on as well, I found that the paint didn't really compare to a good reflector or reflective sticker. The paint is not an expensive venture, and I liked the way that it looked, and it's better than nothing, but, there are better choices out there if good visibility is your goal.

I wanted something that was visible at dawn/dusk, given that a lot of my commutingng is at dusk when the cars might not have their lights on. So when the paint peeled on my old commuter bike,  I painted it (rattle-can) in dayglow yellow and dayglow orange - then I covered it in reflective tape.  Not only was it visible day and night, but no one would steal it if there were ANY other options available.

 

If I had cared more about the old frame, I would have had it powder coated, but the rustoleum held up just fine.

I remembered that someone had raised the same issue several years ago on this listserve and it was noted that Krylon had just come out with a paint that seemed to fit the requirements that people were looking for. While doing a Google search I found that Krylon has a paint called "Reflect-A-Lite" described on their website which I believe was the paint cited. I also found a forum that discusses the same subject:
