Hi, All,

for all you DIY folks:

I developed and posted a handlebar bag pattern for a GB-25-size bag to
the files for the list. It is in DXF format (autocad/Microstation),
and will print to scale for those of you who can manage those sorts of
files and have access to an E-size (ANSI) plotter. The project is
not too terribly difficult if you're familiar with a sewing machine.
There is a set of directions that go with it. I'll hunt those down
and post them as well. Happy Sewing!

If you do sew this project, please post back and let us know how it
went. I've made a few from this pattern, and they've been quite
satisfactory in use to date.

Cheers,

Will

Hi, All,

The file names are:

Test_Pattern.dxf (file)
test_pattern_15may09_v6.pdf (directions)

Hi, All,

It has been pointed out to me that most folks don't play with CAD
drawings on a regular basis.

I've deleted the DXF file and replaced it with a 24X36PDF, file name
Test_Pattern.PDF If you can print that size paper (say, at your local
print shop), then the pattern will print to scale. Please let me know
if you decide to build it. I'd be interested in any way I can improve
the pattern and instructions.

Best Regards,

Will

How do I get to "the files for the list"?

Dear Bob,

on the upper right margin ("frame") of this page, look for a series of
links:

Click on "Files". Select the files you want to download, and you're
off to the races.

Hi, Will,

That looks like a fun project. We bought a new sewing machine about
six months ago. Time to put it through its paces??

What is the planned mounting system for this? Rando/constructeur
front rack with decaleur?

Hi, Nick et al,

I'll get some photos taken and post them.

I use these on my bikes with front racks with a décaleur. It is one
thing the French constructeurs got right, in my opinion. I add an
inch and a half tall rectangular interior top frame from coroplast and
rivet the décaleur to that. Depending on your décaleur design, the
top frame isn't necessary, but it does keep the bag very square and
tall.

My décaleurs were designed to be compatible with the Rene Herse
décaleurs (pin spacing 40mm; the Singer spacing is narrower, around
32mm), but are set up to mount threadless four-bolt stems. Right now,
I've got a couple of bikes with threadless stems set up for a
handlebar bag, including my Rene Herse, and I was experimenting with
bag and décaleur design, so I was swapping bags from bike to bike as
convenient. Once I get my Herse stem from Mike, I'll use one of his
décaleurs on that machine.

My brother grabbed one of the prototypes, added a strap to the bottom
and a coroplast liner for stiffness, and strapped it to the front rack
of his commuter without a décaleur. One of my friends built a small
basket around another prototype, and uses it that way.

Total weight for the GB25-size bag is around 300g in 1000D nylon,
complete. I've made a few, and the weight does vary a good bit by
color and batch--the lightest was 225g (in navy blue), and the
heaviest 325g (in a greenish grey).

Cheers,

Will

Hi, All,

I've updated the DXF and PDF pattern pieces in the group files for the
DIY handlebar bag based on preliminary review comments. The files
are: test_pattern.dxf and test_pattern.pdf, respectively. I'll update
the instructions as I hear back from you all. Thank you for helping
to improve this pattern, and please do let us all know how the bags
turn out and where I can improve the pattern and directions. I've got
a few photos taken of the bags, but still have to find a happy home
for them online.

Cheers,

Will

Hi William et. al,

I ended up making a bag based on the pattern you posted, and I finally
got around to blogging about the results. Check it out at:

Excellent article.

Hi, Dylan,

Congratulations. The bag looks wonderful. Please give me/post your
revisions to the pattern/directions so that others benefit from your
experience, and happy travels. I've got one that's almost two years
old now, got 15,000mi in the Colorado sun on it, and it is doing fine
(though it doesn't look nearly as crisply finished as your work).

Cheers,

Will

Hi, All,

Dylan's blog has died, and therefore that handlebar bag PDF is no longer easily available. I will see if I can find an online home for it. I note that some people are selling it on Pinterest. Please just bug me via PM for a copy vs. paying them. They don't add value (other than, I suppose, convenience).

Best Regards,

Will

Hi, All,

This pattern lost its online home again. I've sent a copy to those who directly contacted me, and found I could repost the pattern pdf over at the iBOB list, and have included a bit more design information in the relevant post:.

I hope you find this useful, and please send/post photos and any suggestions for improvements.

Best Regards,

Will

By the way, for those who are interested in this sort of thing, I have several DIY projects/tutorials posted on the Dill Pickle site.

They all have pictures and comprehensive instructions, and the patterns are designed so that you can either print all the pieces on letter-sized paper or create them just by measuring out rectangles. The instructions include recommendations for where to order materials online, or how to recycle/up-cycle materials instead.

My aim with these is that they should be reasonably accessible for people of all levels of sewing experience and provide a vehicle for practicing basic sewing skills while producing useful finished items - along with instructions for how to modify or re-size them as needed. Projects I’ve posted include a cycling cap, a wedge-shaped saddle bag, a wallet, a backpack or tote bag, and an assortment of duffel bags and zippered pouches.

I try to post a new one every year around the holiday season, because I like the idea of making personal and practical gifts instead of trampling strangers at the mall on Black Friday.

If there’s anything you’re interested in for a future project, I’m happy to take requests. I’m also happy to answer any questions you have along the way!

Emily
