One thing that is slightly annoying about many (most) Google Groups is that when I hit Reply or Reply All (using Gmail), it ONLY sends a message to the author of the message. What is the point of that? I usually want my message to go to ALL those on the list, so I have to manually copy and paste ran...@googlegroups.com into the "To" field. Am I the only one that finds this annoying? Or is just my Gmail/browser setting?
But there is easy fix in the preference settings. Email me offlist and I'll send a screen shot of how to fix this.
Cheers,

Jeff and others,
I prefer "Replies are sent to the whole group." under "Replies to messages" as shown on the screen shot. But I believe the default setting is "Replies are sent to the author of the message" which is typically pointless.
It seems like there was a setting in gmail where a default setting can be set so it always does "reply to all" when there are more than one sender, but I cannot put my finger on it right now.

P.S. The one thing I cannot figure out is how to upload a custom logo or photo, instead of using one their stock illustrations (baseball and basketball selected).

Richard,

I'd like to see that screen shot.

Thanks,
Jeff

The current setting for the randon list is "Users decide where their
replies are sent". As far as I know, it has been the same setting
since we moved to Google Lists several years ago. Personally I like
the fact that I have to select Reply to all or manually change the
address in the To field, in order to send a message to the list. This
prevents me from sending a message to the list accidentally, when I
just want to send a private reply. And that is something I have done
several times on other randonneuring mailing lists that have "Reply to
list" as the default setting.

randon has over 1000 members all around the world, and I would prefer
that people stop briefly and think about it, before sending a reply to
such a large list. This minor inconvenience is part of how we are able
to keep the list (for the most part) on topic and free of spam, with
minimal moderation.

Marcello,
I see, I have just switched over to Gmail from using a POP3 email, and I do have to hit an extra pull down menu for reply all (unlike my previous Apple mail ap). But won't the "Reply All" method send two messages to the original author(s)? Or does Google groups prevent that from happening? Personally, I would rather manually change the address when I plan to do an off-list reply...after all, that is the exception and not the rule.

Defaulting reply-to-sender also follows the "method of least surprise", meaning that the expected behavior when doing a little-r reply is to go to the sender.

I've managed a lot of lists (and list services) and I found reply-to-list frequently creates havoc when people send email to the list intending a personal reply to sender.

If you have a ton of extra time on your hands there's some good discussion of this issue at http://woozle.org/~neale/papers/reply-to-still-harmful.html

I JUST got burned by this, I thought I was replying to the individual, and poof!  my own post showed up on the list. DANG!

Keep it the way it is.
