Has anyone had this problem whether from riding or not and been able
to come back to riding. I believe Floyd Landis had this also. I ride a
recumbent. I don't know if that makes it harder to come back. I would
be interested to hear your experiences as I have just been diagnosed
with this. I do alot of riding.

I know a few people who have had hip replacements and gone back to
cycling to their premorbid levels. Not due to avascular necrosis, but
I believe the treatment, and therefore the outcome, should be the
same.

Typically, avascular necrosis of the hip requires replacement of the
head and neck of the femur (the "ball" side of the hip's ball & socket
joint). Presuming no other co-morbidities or complications, you should
be able to resume riding (& everything else) without too much trouble.

Good Luck!

It wouldn't apply to bone problems, but they had a medical segment on
the news this week about a procedure where they harvest some of your
cartilage, grow it in the lab for 6 weeks, then replace the new bigger
cartilage back in your joint. It's portrayed as a less invasive
alternative to many of the joint replacements being done now for worn
out joints. Made the news because that 41 year old woman olympic
swimmer had a knee done.
