This was posted over on the Rivendell group. I think it's a joke, of
sorts. Still, I could totally see someone doing this with
randonneuring gear, especially after a PBP abandon or failure to make
the time cut.

I remember seeing an E-Bay auction lamenting some national race and how
the person was done, etc., etc. a few years ago. Given that, I find it
hard to believe that this auction is legit.

I don't think the auction is entirely legit but I think his
frustration and despair is. He at least has a sense of humor about it.
I'm sure he'll be back racing cross next year.

I remember finishing a 600k last year and was just beat. All through
the last 30 miles I kept saying to myself "Why am I doing this? How is
it I thought this would be fun?" and "I'll never ride anything over
300k again." The next morning I was looking into doing a 1200k the
next year.

Sometimes "fun" won't be part of the equation! For some, the "fun" would begin in the last 30 miles of that 600k.
Guess it depends on your definition of fun.

Allegedly it is legit. From a Portland, OR blogger and Oregonian columnist:
http://everydayathleteblog.com/2009/12/11/maybe-the-best-ebay-posting-ever/

"Late Breaking News: I’m in touch with the salesman in question. It appears to be Sam Krieg of Pocatello, Idaho. And… it also appears that it’s not a joke! Who’s going to be the first bidder? I’m tempted by the tire selection alone."

Yo Mikey -

Would that have been Kramer's 600? The one that I DNSed? From what I've heard of that ride, if you WEREN'T questioning your sanity by the finish, you'd be one sick puppy. Glad to hear that "randonesia" set in. We've all been there at one time or another. My decision not to ride had me questioning my fortitude and future as a rando. Fortunately, I did MW's Barlow Trail 300, and got over my "Maupin Jinx" (the XTR 600 was the second or third ride thru Maupin that had defeated me one way or another). Missed the GRR, but I'm all psyched for the C1200 this year and PBP next, so I've fully returned to the delusionality that is randonneuring.

ps - good thing the CX person on ebay decided to bag it. The last thing we need is another uber-jock deciding this is THE place to be and moving in.
