Thanks!

I've been thinking about planting some of those rejected Royal Coronas from the Bean Club. Any reason I shouldn't try doing that?

They should sprout. If you aren't willing to waste too many try a few at first. In a week or less you should know if they are viable, and can plant more.

I received my seeds last week. What kind of feedback are you expecting besides bush/pole?

Thanks!

Elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth,

We would like to know if they are a runner, pole or bush bean, and also how much the plant produced.
Thank you everyone for the help.

Best,

I got five plants from six seeds. Unfortunately, my notes are lackluster. I don't know which variety this is. They climb but I would not consider them prolific climbers.

I want to post my 2018 RG bean results.  We had a very very rainy summer in Virginia, coupled with a groundhog, poor bean showing.
Scarlet Runner -- a true runner, few beautiful blossoms, yet no beans.  Sad
Corona - bush, beans fully germinated, nice plants, produced only 9 good beans though, maybe 15 gm total.
Cranberry - bush, produced 25 beans, all molded on vine, poor quality
Raquel - bush, produced 45 beans, all nice quality
Jacob's Cattle - bush, 49 beans, some molded on vine
Marcella - bush, 167 beans produced, many molded on vine
Brown Tepary - bush, 17 beans produced
Dixie Speckled - bush, very nice beans, produced 230 beans, best yield, variable size beans, some as small as lentils.

When comparing this bean trial to my other beans, in general this year was very low production due to rain and animals eating leaves.  My pole string beans produced fair and were eaten twice by a groundhog, my heavy producers (yellow eye, borlotti) in past years also faired poorly this year in separate plots.

It is interesting that the Dixie Speckled did well in the south, never seen that bean before, would try again.  I think I will stick to my saved beans that have worked well for me in past and not venture out in the future, but it was fun trying these beans.

My report is unfortunately very simple. Zero. All varieties were planted May 11th in Zone 6b. It then proceeded to rain for over a month. Nothing came up. Washed away, rotted? To be fair none of our other beans came up either. No beans this year. I think I would be willing to try again to be able to taste some new (to me) varieties.

Thank you for what you do Rancho Gordo!

Thank you all for these reports.  My report is similar:  no beans. But that’s because since growing conditions were so poor I’ve beem waiting.  I’m looking to see what fall growing conditions look like and alternately am setting up a small growing area in my basement where I will have control over conditions and with that, yields to report.

I felt like a failure and am more hopeful for next year seeing I am not the only one that didn't do well with the RG beans. I am in SoCal and we had a 116° week that destroyed my entire garden. I plan on getting shades up for next year in hopes for some protection from our beastly hot summers.

It’s been  very very hard growing year.  Here in the mid-Atlantic,  late spring then lots and lots of rain followed by blistering heat, more rain, more heat and now rain again. Many crops rotted in the field, or the seeds did.  With all this rain the vintage is likely to be poor as well.   My brother has been growing micro greens in his home and I’m taking a page out of his book to set up a growing area in my basement, with lots of artificial sunlight and optimal growing conditions.  To have planted would have been to waste the seeds.

I'm just beginning to harvest dry beans. Most of mine went in later than those of you in the South, I'm guessing. I'm in Sonoma County, California. I have a community garden plot - large as those things go, but still small, and lots of predation by gophers and others rodents. That said, it looks like I will have enough scarlet runner seeds to try eating them (I never have, mainly growing for ornament) and enough jacob's cattle and tepary for seed for another year. I often grow the samples out for seed, and share some with neighbors if they seem to do well in my climate and soil conditions and yield pretty well. Phina Borgeson

Thank you so much!  The forecast is for a much drier Year this year; planting should be possible.  Last fall wasas wet and miserable as the spring!  Better days ahead.
