Woo Hoo! Score!

Just got back from two weeks away from internet and phone to find bean goodness at my door: Ayocote Amarillo, Good Mother Stollard, Eye of the Goat, Lila, and San Franciscano. Great selection.

My two 1980's beans didn't grow. They are going to need some magic. In meantime, they have provided sunny space for the 2017 Bean Trial beans.

Many thanks.

Hi Tom and others. Anyone know the growth habit of each of these? I did some research, but couldn't find the info on Lila and San Franciscano. Phina Borgeson

This season, I am hoping to learn which of my bean just produce once and which keep going. I also hope to learn which shut off production when some pods are drying out and which don’t. My soil, earthworms and automated watering seem to ensure steady growth. I’d planted some Good Mother Stollards from 2014 that didn’t germinate in the weeks before we left, and low and behold, they are growing.

All my beans have some netting they can climb whether they need it or not. Many tendrils are already 4’ high, some climbing on the tomato cages, I had hoped were protected.

Hello!  Thanks, Rancho Gordo, for doing these bean trials.  My beans have been in the ground almost two months, now, and I thought I’d give a report on how I planted them and how they’re doing.

I'm in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.  I planted my beans along a fence in my backyard on May 28.  The fence runs North-South, so I guess the beans are facing East.  They get pretty full sun for most of the day.  And it's been raining a lot in Atlanta since I planted them (or at least it feels like it has been).

Here's how I planted them:

I dug up grapefruit-sized holes about three feet apart right near the base of the fence and did this for each hole:

  • Filled with commercial garden soil
  • Mixed in about 3+ Tbsp legume innoculant (from Amazon)
  • Mixed in a bit of red clay (that’s what our yard soil is)
  • Created a shallow indentation, put one type of beans inside (each envelope had ten beans, I think), and covered back with soil/innoculant mix
  • Sprinkled more innoculant on top
  • Watered so as to moisten all the new soil
  • Covered dampened soil patch with dry soil
  • After about a month or so, added some more innoculant to the soil around each set of bean plants, added a bit of garden soil, and covered the soil with mulch.

I try to water them most days when there's not a decent rain.  I’m not sure how much water I give them; I use a hose with a multi-setting nozzle, put it on the shower setting, hold the nozzle to the ground where the bean plants are coming out, and spray for maybe like 20 seconds, or I see water rivulets running downhill from the bean plants.

I put all my the 2017 Bean Trial photos I’ve taken so far into a Google Photos album.  My plan is to continue updating the album whenever I take new photos of the bean plants.  Here’s the link to the album (I think anyone with the link can see the photos and any updates I make to the album in the future):  https://photos.app.goo.gl/RiAPzr1g67rsfgO53

And here's the most recent photo in the album; I took it today (July 20, 2017).  From left to right, the plants are:  (1) Good Mother Stallard, (2) Lila, (3) Eye of the Goat, (4) San Franciscano, and (5) Ayocote Amarillo.

I welcome any comments or suggestions.  I don't have much (successful) gardening experience; any gardening decisions I make are based either on internet research or whatever strikes me as sensible at the time.

Your beans look healthy and vigorous -- good for you!  I very much enjoyed reading about your progress and seeing your photos.

I wonder if your neighbor gets to pick the beans that mature on his side of the fence?

Alas, I handicapped myself by falling (twice!) and having to allow healing time for my sprained hands and one foot.  I was making a new bed for my Bean Buddies beans but finishing that had to wait while I was/am healing.  I am much better and will be planting my beans this weekend, weather permitting.  I hope there's enough growing time remaining this year here near New Orleans for these varieties to produce a good crop.

Happy Dodson
