Hey all!

Wow, it's been a week and we've already attracted 205 members (67
messages!) to his new google group. I'm glad to know that there are
so many people interested in discussing these types of topics.

Perhaps we can all take a moment to introduce ourselves to the rest
of the group.

* Who are you?
* Where are you from?
* Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one?
* How did you hear about this group?
* anything else you want to share with the group...

I look forward to learning more about all of you. :-)

Cheers,

-Robby

Hi all,

I am Diego Lapiduz, from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I run a small development firm here and our clients are mainly in the
US. We develop our project in Rails, not because fanaticism but
because we like it. We also like to develop some projects from our
own ideas and Rails makes it possible.

I heard about this group in some RSS feeds (i have lots of them) and
immediately signed up. One of my top interests is the IT business and
all around it.

Salute you all,

Hey.

I'm Robert Fischer from Minnesota (USA).

I'm a consultant: my tag line is "IT Firefighter", which pretty much sums
up what I do. My primary interest is in the leadership of technology
development teams -- how do you get geeks to produce the software that
customers want in a way that keeps management happy? That bridge position
between technology, management, and the customer is a pretty rough one,
and I spend a lot of time looking at how to make it more manageable.

My interest in Rails is twofold. One, I'd like to start a small web
application, and Rails seems far and away the easiest to do that. Two,
its approach to development is one that I really like, and it's
interesting to see things like Ruport leveraging the Rails approach in
other areas.

Hello all,

I'm Anthony Eden, owner of Aetrion LLC. I spoke on ActiveWarehouse at
RailsConf this year. I am currently living down in Melbourne, Florida.
During the day I work for a government contracting company and during
"off-hours" I have my own company doing data warehouse development
with Rails. I heard about this group on the Rails list. I'll be
speaking again on ActiveWarehouse at erubycon, so if you didn't make
it to RailsConf then I hope to see you there (even if you *did* make
it to RailsConf it'll still be lots of fun I'm sure).

I also developed and maintain Gemtacular ( http://gemtacular.com/ )
which is the place to find out about RubyGems, new and old, and I'm a
regular attendee at ORUG, the Orlando Ruby User's Group. Oh, and I'm
learning Erlang now...whee!

Side note: I think Robby should tell us all about himself too, don't
ya think? ;-)

Run Meticulous (www.meticulous.com) with Justin Hankins and my
sister. We are a design, programming, and film group. We launched ten
rails sites in 2006, half of them utilizing RadiantCMS, and the other
half being custom content systems for various clients. Currently
working on (whenever I have free time) a production pipeline

I also work with Amy Hoy on various projects including the not-yet-

Currently, I'm the Exec. Director of PLANET ARGON. We have two
departments within our company, one that focuses on Rails deployment
and hosting (and is launching a new product in the coming weeks!)...
and the other, which is where most of our revenue comes from, is our
Design and Development department. We focus on Interaction Design and
the User Experience... and use Rails as our platform for web
development.

> * How did you hear about this group?

Honestly, I was taking a shower last Monday before heading to work
after a long weekend of conferencing'n... and thought, "I should
start a group." I have a lot of "in the shower" ideas that I make a
reality within a few hours. I've heard of some people installing
whiteboards in their showers... haven't gotten that far myself yet.
Someday soon though...

If there is more that you'd like to know about me, feel free to
respond with more questions. I encourage you all to ask each other
lots of questions! :-)

Off to enjoy the rest of my "day off"... which really means that I'm
in the office by myself for half the day trying to catch up on some
paperwork and managerial tasks. :-p

> * Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one?

I'm a freelancer these days, specialising in rails programming, web
app development and software consulting - I know this because it says
so on my biz card. I work from home almost exclusively, (I have a
nice new office set up here), and have done remote work for the last
4 years for clients in the US, Singapore, and other parts of Australia.

In a past life I worked for a local web dev consultancy, which I quit
in 2004 to start contracting, partly because I was sick of writing
PHP - I swore I would never do web work again until I saw Rails!

> * How did you hear about this group?

the magic of RSS and the intarweb, Robby's feed and others mentioned it.

Ummmm. well... OK, here's 3 random facts about me:

* I nearly started a PhD - before I came to my senses.
* I am married and have a 10 month old son who stays at home with me
while I work.
* If I had never discovered programming in the 6th grade, I probably
would have become a chef.

Self-employed at the moment. I've been largely self-employed since
1992, with a couple of startup and consultancy stints. I'm utterly
ruined for big company work at this point. Being far out in the
sticks, and with four small kids to help take care of, I'm working

The continuing story of my transition to a reinvented career is over
at http://afreshcup.com . At this point I've got my first Rails app
for a client about ready to go live and I'm actively hunting around
for more clients or subcontracting opportunities. Working in the .NET
universe would be preferable to starvation, but I'm hoping not to
have to make that choice.

Been doing Rails work since March '06 (doing a bit of Java stuff but not

Heard about this (I think) on the Yahoo! group that got started at
RailsConf by the independent contractor BoF.
I am doing all the wrong things from a business standpoint (I'm a sole

rectify those within the year.
On the other hand, I am profitable and am enjoying the work that I'm doing.

Other than that, I look forward to some good discussions and meeting

I'm Damien, a 31 geek by nature, web developer by trade.

I've been doing web development since '99, in 2002 made it my career,
I've mostly done PHP work in the past and got into Rails due to it
being a logical continuation of my framework usage & knowledge. I've
always been interested in frameworks: I wrote several in PHP over the
years, when my job took me down the ColdFusion path I discovered that
Fusebox was a natural continuation of my own frameworks development,
and now I see Rails as the next step beyond that. Of course the
simply wonderful Ruby language helps too.

I've got a day-job with a wonderful company that has allowed me to

I first started into Rails in December 2005 by reading the Agile Web
Dev book cover-to-cover; I started my first app in February of 2006
but have yet to complete it. My first real Rails app was started
about two weeks ago and will hopefully be launched in another two-ish
weeks. Oh, and Redmine (redmine.org) has made me a better developer.

Hi, I'm Tim Case, ruby pirate and rails ninja

I'm originally from Southern California, and have recently moved to
Seattle. I've spent the bulk of my rails career living and working in
Florianópolis Brazil. It was the best thing that ever happened to me
as I worked for clients in the states while living on the beaches of
Brazil. I've fallen in love with the idea of working in the location
that you choose and will not only return to Brazil in six months but
I'm looking at other places to work at around the world in the future.

I work for myself, and I'm spending time in Seattle to completely
revise my business practices as a freelancer. I worked previously
without contracts and without much thought into what I was doing on
the business end. Now, I'm looking to incorporate and make my rails
freelancing a much improved business.

I heard about this group through Mike Gunderloy's blog and after
attending the Business of Rails session at Railsconf myself thought
this was a great idea for the rails community. There are a lot of us
out there who are good developers but are still new to the business
side of things and I think we have a lot to gain collectively if we
pool are ideas and resources much the same way we do with rails.

Thanks, Robby for starting this group!

I'm Seth Fitzsimmons and I live in Somerville, MA. I share office
space in Cambridge with a few other Rails hackers. We're trying to
run things like Citizen Space and keep it as an open-environment for
people to drop by and work in. (If you're in the Boston area and
interested in sharing space coworking-stylee, drop me a line.) I've
found that it makes working "alone" much more palatable, as it
provides a place for me to go in the morning and helps me get into
"work mode." I relish the idea of working from anywhere, hence the
current free agent status.

At the moment, I'm primarily contracting for EastMedia in NYC and
helping out with a few projects with what's left of my time. I'm
interested in GIS/Rails integration and spent considerable time about
a year ago working with Ferret/Solr/Lucene. While at my last job, I
spent some time hacking on ActiveMessaging, which provides JMS-
integration to Rails. More recently, I've been fooling around some
with JRuby and Lucene.

I got here by way of Perl, PHP, and Java (Struts + Spring), so I feel
like I've had representative exposure to their relative strengths and
weaknesses. I've been working with Rails since around 0.13 or so and
still really dig it; it hits pretty close to the sweet spot for most
of the projects I've worked on.

I heard about the group from Robby's blog. Unfortunately, I missed
the panel that spawned it.

Hi all,

Amy Newell, living and working in Brookline, MA. My husband Max,
who's been doing web dev since 1994, convinced me to try programming
in 1999, and I was a Java developer for a biotech for a few years
before going on work hiatus to be with our kids (son 4, daughter 5
months). We're both sick of the working dad/stay-at-home mom model
though, and want to each work part-time, and ideally as a team. So
since February we've been working on learning rails together (just to
do something new, and because it looked cool) and finding paying
clients (in rails, java, perl, requirements engineering, data-
warehousing, and anything else we're qualified to do). We're building
our first rails app right now, for actual paying clients (yippee!) and
looking for more clients. We'd love more rails work, since we are just
loving the RoR community, but we'll take what we can get if it means
neither of us has to go get our souls crushed into a cubicle shape. We
have a site and blog in kind of a beta format at www.thirdbit.net.
Heard about the group from some feed or other. (Attending railsconf
was really not an option for us this year, though we did make it to
the Boston Ruby User's Group hackety hack presentation, nursing infant
in tow. ) I am loving writing code again, and Max is loving spending
so much time with the kids and also writing code, and we really hope
that we can get this consulting thing to work out for us long-term.

It's really encouraging to hear from so many other people on this list
who are trying to do something a little different in their work
lives.

Hello everyone,

Chris Hall here, from Tampa, FL. I've been doing web dev since
mid/late 90's with perl and then PHP while working for Sprint and then
IBM for a short period. Now working at a small local company working
with Rails on 100% of our new projects. So far I've developed a
warehouse inventory tracking app and just recently pushed out the
second phase of an 'enterprise' warehouse box tracking app. Cut my
teeth on some Rails core by writing the original acts_as_modified
plugin which was later rewritten by Jonathan Viney, who really did a
great job.

All my work has been in-house corporate development but I'm now
looking to get into consulting work and eventually become
self-sufficient. If anyone's got any tips on getting started with low
overhead, it would be much appreciated!

Kinda, but not really. I work for a consulting center based at the
University of Oregon. Tech consulting is not our primary focus. Our
budget is 100% from federally funded grants, but we're under the
umbrella of the University. I'm an IT guy, but I've been doing a lot

external app, and another in development, all in Rails. Since I've
found enough development to do, my department is going to let me
telecommute from Portland.

university-style bureaucracy grows thinner by the day...)

Hello,

My name is Russell Christopher,i've been a backend C++/Java developer
for 10+years. I stared to learn Ruby and ROR about a year and a half
ago. I always had a need for simple (mostly) front ends to monitor/
simulate the backends I was writing. I used several rich client
toolkits over the years but I was never satisfied as much as I am
with ROR. The combination of Ruby and the philosophy of Rails really
appeal to me. So much so that I want to focus my career on Ruby and
ROR solutions as a free lance consultant. I'm interested in apps that
consume and/or create RESTful web services.

I'm from Raleigh, NC.

I heard about this group from a blog about RailsConf 2007 that
mentioned it.

I'm leaning toward creating an S-Corp for myself, although I think the
window of opportunity for that may be closing soon (until next year).

I'm evaluating various API's including the large e.g. Google, Yahoo,
Amazon, and the small e.g. Basecamp, etc. I'm looking at how I might
build on these services or how to feed them if possible.

There are many obstacles/pit falls and I thank this list for providing
some food for thought.

Russell

I run a small web development firm with 6 Rails developers (myself

Hi,

My name is Tom Klaasen, living in Belgium. Together with Koen Van der Auwera, I've started a business - 10to1 - at the beginning of this year.
At the moment, we're doing Java consulting during the day to get a sound financial foundation. At the side, we're developing some projects based on Ruby on Rails ( http://shareomatic.com is an example)

Our goal is to migrate our interests from Java more and more to Ruby, meaning that we would start using Ruby for our day task too. This could be either on a consultancy basis (we get paid by the hour, the customer reaps all benefits) or a partnership (two partners reap the benefits together - of course, this means sharing the risk too).

Speaking of which: if anybody has experience with partnership, I would be very pleased to hear about them.

Oh, and for statistics purposes: I read about this group on Robby's blog.

Hope to share and learn a lot on this group,

Hi, all. I'm Bobby Santiago, from the tropical paradise that is Cebu,
the Philippines. I'm a full-time Rails designer/developer, and I can
explain that term easily: my former life as a creative director in an
ad agency had me dabbling in design, then I found Rails. So now I am
this weird mutation straddling left and right brain, which just means,
thanks to Rails, I can design UI AND code the backend by my lonesome.
A team of one, as it were.

I have been lucky enough to make Rails apps my full time job, and I
work on my own Rails apps after my "day job" (i.e., when I get home
from Starbucks).

All in all a nice way to live, watching my kids grow whilst loving my

Hello,

My name is Keith Veleba, and I'm from Sandusky , OH, USA.

I run a one man consulting company and have clients all over Ohio.
I do web design and development, custom software development and
general IT work.

I started using Rails when I was part of a startup that needed a large
development done in a short time. I originally was going to go down
the Java or the Python road, as I had more experience with them than
Ruby. After reading about RubyOnRails, I dove in, and gave it a try.
With little Ruby and even less Rails knowledge, I was able to complete
the project in 70 days, which completely blew my mind.

I try to use Ruby and Rails on any project where it fits, but I also
do Java and C# development as well.

I saw some discussions on health care and naming your business on one
of my Ruby/Rails RSS feeds, so I thought I'd check it out. A lot of
the things you're discussing are not restricted to Rails
consultancies, but being a freelancer in general. I welcome some
lively discussions.

I've started up a blog discussing web application/business analysis

I've been a nerd for a good solid decade now so hopefully there's

Hi,

I read about this group on Planet Rails and decided to join. My name
is Jamey Cribbs and I live in Farmington Hills, Michigan. For the
past two years, I've been moonlighting as a Rails developer, looking
for a chance to start my own business. Well, two weeks ago, I quit my
day job and went to work full-time for myself as a Rails contractor.
I have a full-time contract with a company on the east coast and a
smaller gig with another company here in Michigan. I get to
telecommute for both. I am both scared shit-less and having the most
fun I've had in years!

I'm very happy to find this group, as I can see that you have already
been discussing a lot of the questions that I am starting to encounter
myself. Thanks for starting this group!

We're not strictly a Ruby/Rails shop. We definitely love Ruby and
think Rails is neat, but out focus is high quality software whether
in Ruby, Java, C++, or what ever is the right tool for the job.

I'm pleased to be on the list and look forward to many great

I work two gigs... By day, I'm a programmer / sysadmin / manager of and mentor to students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where I help manage the web development office.  By evening, weekends, and vacation, I run NAPCS, a company I started in 1995, where I develop web apps and web sites for small businesses.  I've been writing some books too, and basically stretching myself very thin. :)

My main focus, though, is to do what I can to help others be successful in whatever they do.

I think it's incredible that people are willing to share so much about business structure, billing, etc. I don't think I've ever seen such an open discussion like this before. Usually people go through a lot to keep this information private.  I am proud and humbled to be a part of it.

Hey Gang,
I am Gustin Prudner and am owner of a recently launched software
venture called entryway.
I've been in the development world for about 12 years working on
projects small to large ranging from scientific computing to
international media corps.
Sick of the inefficiency and ethics of big business I founded a
company focused on supporting positivity in the world.
We've been in business for six months and have obtained some great
clients doing cool stuff: organic tshirts company, green building
supplies, organic box delivery, environmental clean-up company,
holistic based non-profit etc.
We are technologically agnostic to some degree but are using
rails and ruby wherever possible because we feel the methodology and
aesthetics of rails, and ruby particularly, are pure joy.

I look forward to learning and sharing on this forum!

Hi all,

I am Cloves Carneiro Jr, I am a Canadian/Brazilian Rails developer
living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I run a web development firm
called SpinBits - http://spinbits.com -, our clients are mainly from
the region so far. I and my partner, Rida Al Barazi - http://ridaalbarazi.com
- only develop our projects in Rails, and have been able to take a few
projects since starting SpinBIts in January 2007. The business
environment here is totally different from North America, and I
sometimes have a hard time adapting to some practices; but overall,
we've been able to keep busy all the time and work on interesting
projects.

I've been following the group for the last few weeks, and I'd love to
participate actively in some discussions from now on. BTW, we are
hiring a Rails Developer and a Web Designer for a 2-month contract,
for details go to http://spinbits.com/jobs.

I've also just finished writing the 'Beginning Rails' book for Apress

Started in the industry back in 94 with my own company, worked for
someone else for a few years, now kind of coming back full circle and
working for myself. Most of my time was spent developing online
payment/ecommerce systems and I still love doing that. I'm with Wes
I'm completely unsuited for corporate work and grew tired of following
someone else's dream. Currently I'm doing contract/consulting jobs

Hi.

My name is Jonathan Nelson, and I recently moved to San Jose, CA. My
day job is as an ER nurse, but I've been a geek my whole life. I'm
finally changing careers to work with what I love: computers. I
have 30 credits left to get my degree in Software Engineering through
the University of Maryland's distance education program.

My long-term goal is to have serial start-ups. Right now, I'm
planning on working part-time as a nurse and developing web apps with
the rest of the time.

I've got some Java and Perl under my belt, but neither language is a
good fit for me. I've noodled around a tad with Python, Scheme and
OCaml as well. After looking around at different Languages/
Frameworks, I settled on RoR. I really like Ruby, Rails is very
cool, and the community is top notch.

I've been spending my summer learning RoR, and I'm working on my first
startup idea. Cuuute.com. It's going to be a social news site like
reddit, but for cute things. I've just started on it, so we'll see
how it goes.

I just found out about this group through the Ruby on Rails discussion
group, and I've really liked what I've read so far.

I work as a Java Developer by day, trying to get a technologie for
working at night i was checking Rails, but im trying Symfony framework
for PHP, im trying to create my own web agency using the best
technology for me.

Im running a news related site for my country, http://www.kakareo.com,
built on top of Askeet a question/answer application built on top of
Symfony.

I have a question regarding this, why is better to pick Rails over
Symfony PHP or any other web framework around usnig another language
and not Ruby, i made some little test and i find that the two can make
the same thing in more or less the same way.

I might be a Java head, but all my personal sites run on dynamic
languages. My blog is hosted on typo, my photo gallery is running
Gallery (PHP app). I dabbled with Rails and Camping.

Well, this quite a nice group, so I decided to introduce myself, so without further ado here are the answers to Robby's original intro questions

* Who are you?
I am Jose Luis Hurtado, a web developer and project manager who just loves technology and business innovation. I have been involved with computers since the Commodore 64 became the first affordable microcomputer. From then I have used and "evolved" from the Amiga, to the PC and lately to the Mac. I still use Windows at work and like Linux since it makes a solid server environment.

* Where are you from?
I live in Toronto, Canada. But came from Lima, Peru a few years ago.  So yes Spanish is welcome, as well as French.

* Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one?
Right now I am doing contract work for my own small business, but I am looking for any good opportunities out there in web development or project management; be it with PHP or Ruby on Rails.

* How did you hear about this group?
It was most likely on the Ruby mail list.

* Anything else you want to share with the group...
I like the "soft side" of programming very much, so things like development methodologies, software patterns, and information architecture are topics I enjoy. Lately I am reading Crystal Clear, one of the best Agile Methodologies out there.

Ruby on Rails fits all of this topics like a glove, so no wonder I like it so much.

Signing off, from Toronto!

Go to the Google Groups site, 'log out', then 'log in' / 'create an
account' with your "real" e-mail address.
