We've been developing a CRM app for a real estate company that we now
wish to offer to the public on a subscription model. The bulk of the
code is not specific to estate agents and we were able to adapt the
app to help run our website business in under a day. We also have a
mortgage and loan brokerage company we are adapting the system for. We
want to make it even more generic such that anyone can define their
own product data types and customer relations specific to their
industry, for example freelance designers, car dealerships, etc.
Marketing the application, as well as customer setup and training is
something we'd rather not have to deal with, so we're thinking about
some kind of white label version of the app which can be configured
for the target industry and branded separately. For example, the
estate agents using the system already (lets call them EA) would be
able to offer their customised version of the system to other estate
agents. We'd charge EA a base price per user they sign up, and allow
them to specify a markup and use our billing system to bill their
clients. EA would deal with support and training issues, allowing us
to concentrate on developing the main system. We'd pay EA their markup
monthly. Alternatively, EA can use their own billing system and pay us
our base subscription fee separately.
My question is - does this sounds like a good idea, or are there
caveats and pitfalls I should be aware of. Are other people doing this
kind of thing?
