Wow, it's been a week and we've already attracted 205 members (67 messages!) to his new google group. I'm glad to know that there are so many people interested in discussing these types of topics.
Perhaps we can all take a moment to introduce ourselves to the rest of the group.
* Who are you? * Where are you from? * Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one? * How did you hear about this group? * anything else you want to share with the group...
I look forward to learning more about all of you. :-)
Cheers,

I run a small development firm here and our clients are mainly in the US. We develop our project in Rails, not because fanaticism but because we like it. We also like to develop some projects from our own ideas and Rails makes it possible.
I heard about this group in some RSS feeds (i have lots of them) and immediately signed up. One of my top interests is the IT business and all around it.

I'm a consultant: my tag line is "IT Firefighter", which pretty much sums up what I do. My primary interest is in the leadership of technology development teams -- how do you get geeks to produce the software that customers want in a way that keeps management happy? That bridge position between technology, management, and the customer is a pretty rough one, and I spend a lot of time looking at how to make it more manageable.
My interest in Rails is twofold. One, I'd like to start a small web application, and Rails seems far and away the easiest to do that. Two, its approach to development is one that I really like, and it's interesting to see things like Ruport leveraging the Rails approach in other areas.

I'm Anthony Eden, owner of Aetrion LLC. I spoke on ActiveWarehouse at RailsConf this year. I am currently living down in Melbourne, Florida. During the day I work for a government contracting company and during "off-hours" I have my own company doing data warehouse development with Rails. I heard about this group on the Rails list. I'll be speaking again on ActiveWarehouse at erubycon, so if you didn't make it to RailsConf then I hope to see you there (even if you *did* make it to RailsConf it'll still be lots of fun I'm sure).
I also developed and maintain Gemtacular ( http://gemtacular.com/ ) which is the place to find out about RubyGems, new and old, and I'm a regular attendee at ORUG, the Orlando Ruby User's Group. Oh, and I'm learning Erlang now...whee!
Side note: I think Robby should tell us all about himself too, don't ya think? ;-)

Run Meticulous (www.meticulous.com) with Justin Hankins and my sister. We are a design, programming, and film group. We launched ten rails sites in 2006, half of them utilizing RadiantCMS, and the other half being custom content systems for various clients. Currently working on (whenever I have free time) a production pipeline management application for the visual effects industry.
I also work with Amy Hoy on various projects including the not-yet- launched "Pimp my Rails"

Robby's post on his site.

I play in various music groups, uh, and I like noise. Yes. Noise.

I'm a freelancer doing Rails development, consulting, and training. I also crank out products with Rails on a somewhat regular basis: Tesly, Tesly Jr. (recently made open source), ConferenceMeetup, and CatchTheBest (coming soon).

Robby's blog post.

I have discovered recently that I really enjoy marketing and promotion. :)
Grew up near San Jose, CA... been in Portland, OR for the past seven years.
> * Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one?
Currently, I'm the Exec. Director of PLANET ARGON. We have two departments within our company, one that focuses on Rails deployment and hosting (and is launching a new product in the coming weeks!)... and the other, which is where most of our revenue comes from, is our Design and Development department. We focus on Interaction Design and the User Experience... and use Rails as our platform for web development.
> * How did you hear about this group?
Honestly, I was taking a shower last Monday before heading to work after a long weekend of conferencing'n... and thought, "I should start a group." I have a lot of "in the shower" ideas that I make a reality within a few hours. I've heard of some people installing whiteboards in their showers... haven't gotten that far myself yet. Someday soon though...
If there is more that you'd like to know about me, feel free to respond with more questions. I encourage you all to ask each other lots of questions! :-)
Off to enjoy the rest of my "day off"... which really means that I'm in the office by myself for half the day trying to catch up on some paperwork and managerial tasks. :-p
Cheers,
Robby

Hi, I'm Warren Seen. you can find me online at http://warrenseen.com/ In the event that I ever appear on an irc channel near you, I'll be warren_s.
> * Where are you from?
Australia - the city of Launceston to be more precise. 41.442 S, 147.145 E to be even more precise.
> * Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one?
I'm a freelancer these days, specialising in rails programming, web app development and software consulting - I know this because it says so on my biz card. I work from home almost exclusively, (I have a nice new office set up here), and have done remote work for the last 4 years for clients in the US, Singapore, and other parts of Australia.
In a past life I worked for a local web dev consultancy, which I quit in 2004 to start contracting, partly because I was sick of writing PHP - I swore I would never do web work again until I saw Rails!
> * How did you hear about this group?
the magic of RSS and the intarweb, Robby's feed and others mentioned it.
> * anything else you want to share with the group...
Ummmm. well... OK, here's 3 random facts about me:
* I nearly started a PhD - before I came to my senses. * I am married and have a 10 month old son who stays at home with me while I work. * If I had never discovered programming in the 6th grade, I probably would have become a chef.
Pat Allan - I generally go by the nick freelancing_god on irc. No blog online at the moment.
> * Where are you from?
Melbourne, Australia
> * Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one?
Starting web development freelancing next week - prior to that I was coding in Rails for a design studio since the start of this year, and with ASP.NET before that for a few years (*shudder*)
> * How did you hear about this group?
A friend and fellow ruby/rails coder pointed it out to me.

Mike Gunderloy. Fairly well known in .NET land; I've been in the Microsoft universe since the DOS 2.0 days, but I'm bailing out this year. Rails is my most likely landing spot at the moment.

All over the place - currently eastern WA state; before that, lived full-time in an RV for about 3 years, before that Seattle, VA, New York City, upstate NY, Boston, LA...
> * Do you work for yourself? Run a consultancy? Work for one?
Self-employed at the moment. I've been largely self-employed since 1992, with a couple of startup and consultancy stints. I'm utterly ruined for big company work at this point. Being far out in the sticks, and with four small kids to help take care of, I'm working 100% off-site (which is one reason for one of my side gigs, writing for http://webworkerdaily.com)
> * How did you hear about this group?
Picked it up off some blog in the aftermath of RailsConf. I'm a voracious blog reader.
> * anything else you want to share with the group...
The continuing story of my transition to a reinvented career is over at http://afreshcup.com . At this point I've got my first Rails app for a client about ready to go live and I'm actively hunting around for more clients or subcontracting opportunities. Working in the .NET universe would be preferable to starvation, but I'm hoping not to have to make that choice.
I'm Wes Gamble, and I live and work in Houston, TX. I'm the sole proprietor of Bison Consulting, and have been in business off and on for about 4 years (most recently for the last 14 months). Been doing Rails work since March '06 (doing a bit of Java stuff but not much and don't plan to increase it). Heard about this (I think) on the Yahoo! group that got started at RailsConf by the independent contractor BoF. I am doing all the wrong things from a business standpoint (I'm a sole proprietor and don't have a lawyer or accountant yet), and I hope to rectify those within the year. On the other hand, I am profitable and am enjoying the work that I'm doing.
