New Working Group: RadioDNS Application Synchronisation

Dear All,

RadioDNS enhances broadcast radio with IP functionality, and RadioDNS Applications such as RadioVIS show that we can use this to give a valuable service - such as additional visual or textual information, providing more information about the audio that is being received.

Several groups have independently been thinking about how information can be provided to help synchronise applications more closely to audio.

To this end, I propose the formation of a working group, whose objective is to discover methods and practices to be used by RadioDNS applications to help synchronise applications more closely to audio.

I am happy to initiate the formation of this group and pull together current thoughts into a document for the group to take as its starting point.

I'm hoping we can get a wide range of different opinions here, as it could be very important - please reply to this thread if you would like to be involved, and whether you have any initial thoughts to start us up. Once we have a core group of participants, I'll arrange a project kickoff. For now I suggest we discuss the topic on this list.

we think that the topic is very interesting and worth being better analyzed.

Specially, we’re interested in synchronization with respect to the ability to record audio together with RadioVIS (images, text) and whatever multimedia or interaction object is or will be available.

I had you in mind initially to be involved, but things stalled a little while we all busy. However, I think there is enough information to write some form of document, although I know that people have tried out initial ideas we had and found problems.

Many thanks to everyone who has come forward - I'm really pleased that so many of you have shown an interest in this, and I'm gratified that we appear to have such a good spread of people over areas of expertise and geography.

If nobody has an objection, I would propose that we have our conversation on the RadioDNS Developers list - this list. I am hoping that any conclusions we come to would eventually form part of the main RadioDNS specification, and as such this seems like the natural home for it. I would suggest that the titles of any posts from group are prefixed with "RadioSYNC:" to guide people to our topics.

In terms of a timetable, I shall be writing a post next week starting things off, with a list of who is involved and a short statement of current thoughts, to stimulate discussion. I'm going to be feeding back any ideas into a document, as a way of distilling them. The document isn't meant to indicate we have reached a conclusion, but its good to have something complete to work from.

Hopefully this all seems reasonable, but let me know if have alternative suggestions.
