Thanks to John Dilks (K2TQN) who digitized our “SOWP Sparks Journals”. If  you would like to read some history and the early days of sea going R/O’s. Go to SOWP.ORG and click on the link on the bottom of the text.  The National Silent Key site will come up, click on Access Archive, then on the left of the page click on SPARKS JOURNALS.

You can read any of them on line or down load the pdf issue you want to read. There are some very interesting articles in the Journals.

Thanks again to John for the painstaking time he spent to preserve our issues of the Sparks Journals.

Hi Dick and all,

I went to a local historical society on Saturday and heard two ladies make a presentation on the Morro Castle. They have written a new book on it, mostly with interviews of some survivors and with survivor's children.

Of course they made a big issue on blaming the RO. He in later life was sent to prison, once for bombing his boss and again later for killing his neighbors, they said. He died in prison in 1958 and his prison records are missing. They said only his and those of the Lindbergh baby killer are missing from Trenton State Prison records.

So after all the bad mouthing the questions from the audience started. It seems their was a lady in the audience who was related by marriage to the RO and had lived in his house as a child with the RO's wife, her aunt, after he went to prison.

Big gulp time for the presenters.

You never know who's in the audience.

Hi John:

Good to hear from you as always.

I would never have gulped at all and stood my ground and called that bastard
what he was. I have used Thomas Gallagher's book "Fire at Sea" as more or
less a text book since he published it in 1959. It comes complete with
photographs. It is a shame society has not found a way to eliminate those
bastards before they cause so much grief. He had the Chief Radio Officer of
the MORRO CASTLE fired so he could get the job and God knows how many he
killed before setting fire to the MORRO CASTLE and killing so many more.

I'm getting down off my soap box.

Hi Spud,

Good to hear from you again. I think the presenters never expected to have anyone related to him in the audience. Evidently the relative did not know the story and came to find out. No one in her family would talk about it she said. I guess she learned.

It didn't seem to bother her. But she did empathize at the end that she was only related by marriage.

That young lady on Long Island was killed the other day by/because of a criminal who just got out of jail and was holding her hostage. (shot by friendly fire)

Plenty of Bastards to go around.

I don’t know if it is classified as a handbook, but the radio manual is available at (W7FC) 1-800-807-6146 or  www.vintagemanuals.com the price is $39.00 plus shipping. I have used their service quite a few times and the manuals are excellent.
