Hello group,

I just scanned the log book of TT WILLIAMSBURGH/WGOA to the Internet Archive.
Previously just the first page was available, now the entire log book has been scanned and put up on the Archive.  No log is available for the XXX as it was sent by PJTA before the Auto Alarm bells rang and we were called to watch.

It is along with recordings of the XXX and SOS of PRINSENDAM/PJTA.

Has anyone crewed on the TT Williamsburgh or any of the “Brooklyn” class of tankers? I remember when SEALAND was building this ship in the old New York (Brooklyn) Navy Yard in the 1970’s.

Any experiences or stories would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I was on the Maryland for six months, Alaska to Panama. I also took
the Massachusetts from the Houston area to Boston for layup. I don't
remember if the Mass was the same or not. I might have been on the
Williamsburgh for a month too. If not that one, one of the others.
Been a few decades. I remember the job was scrapped after one trip
(Valdez->PTP) for political reasons and we layed it up in Portland/OR.

Michael,

I was on Williamsburgh from 04 June 1980 until around 06 December 1980 when i got my six months service endorsement, rejoined around 18 December until about 06 June 1981.  During 1980 we went from Valdez to US Gulf then in December 81 we went to St. Croix when the company was bought and sold from Bay Tankers to Andep Steamship in Lake Success which ran the ships from that date, we went to Hounds Point, Scotland where we ran aground and had to go to Rotterdam for shipyard repair, then we went to the Caribbean again and then to US Gulf offshore Texas.

I later had a run on Brooklyn/KGDB in 1986 we went from Puertas Armulles, Panama to Valdez, Alaska and back again.

Later when on the west coast I heard a transmitter I "knew" - it just was tuning up and the sound of those Mackay / ITT transmitters was unmistakable to those of us who sailed on them - I KNEW the transmitter, then I heard him call:

NMO NMO NMO DE WGOA WGOA WGOA QTP K

I called Williamsburgh again and again but the R/O just ignored me.  That would have been one of the last USA ports for WGOA which was on her way to the scrap yard, a sad end for one of the recipients of the "GALLANT SHIP" awards given by MARAD, I received (as did all my fellow shipmates the Gallant Ship Citation bar, and I received a USCG Commendation as did James N. Pfister, CRO, and Arthur H. Fertig, Master, Williamsburgh):

I believe that was Seatrain instead of Sealand. Only four VLCCs in that class: Brooklyn, Bay Ridge, Williamsburgh, Stuyvesant. They typically carried little ballast and took such a pounding northbound in the Gulf of Alaska that hulls cracked.

UST Pacific owner United States Trust. Operated by Interocean Management, Phila. 390K DWT with bicycles for main deck cruising and basketball/racquetball court in fo'csle. I landed on deck by helo a couple times. Were only in U.S. flag service a couple of years. Even had a darkroom that I used quite a bit. Will look for photos.

Hello Dave -

Tnx for that list of Oil Tankers. Only two on that list still exist today.
They are MSC Hospital ships, the rest are history. I bet most were
single botton ships and could not be used anymore. Too bad they
were not replaced. A lot of jobs went with them.

Thanks to David and all on the information on the Williamsburg and the correction about Seatrain, not Sealand, as the builders.

It's a pity the domestics shipbuilding industry has disappeared.
