How can i select on the category eg restaurants and display those for
a set location?

You can first browse through category tree to find the one you need.
Corresponding API docs: http://apidocs.qype.com/placecategories_resource
Then you need to extract integer category id from the id string.
And then use this id as in_category query parameter in the position
search
