Conditionals in Display properties?

Is there somewhere where the markup language used for the Display is documented? It seems to be able to do things like
"print the string 'recorded in <recordingdate> at <location>', but only if those tags are not empty"

I'd likie to do this, but am having difficulty figuring this out. Sorry if this is the wrong place, it's the only group I could find.

Something like this:
<recordingdate|Recorded in <recordingdate><location| at <location>>>>

As for documentation, hmm. There is some on the wiki, but the fact you
couldn't find it speaks to us here I think (see other thread, actually):

Please feel free to write improvement / edits / new pages here, or even
