In the manual I had said that the results list defaults to filter mode (that is the search mode available via the gear menu in the top right of the results list) and changes to Snap to Best mode after right-arrowing into something (like a folder or contact).

This isn't the behavior I'm seeing. I have it set to the default Filter Results and it seems to behave that way all the time.

Am I right? Did this change? Was the manual just always wrong about this?

I had this for the three modes, is it right? I don't think it is for Filter Catalog.

Filter Results - Filters the current results list.
Filter Catalog - Filters, but also includes the entire contents of the top-level catalog. Lasts until you type esc or activate Quicksilver again (⌃-space).
Snap to Best - scrolls the results list to the best match but doesn’t remove non-matching items.

If you right arrow into something, then it *should* switch to filter results (and not snap to best), although I think there is an intermittent bug where QS sometimes doesn't 'reset' to the 'Filter Catalog' mode all the time in some interfaces. If you've got a reliable way of reproducing please let me know.

Now you mention it, QS should probably switch to whatever was used last when you right arrow (i.e. if you were using snap to best then the next time you right arrow it should switch to snap to best as well).

Other than that, what you say is right. The 'filter catalog' mode is basically just the 'global search'. It searches the entire catalog. It lasts until you right arrow into something, and resets when you close/open the interface

Actually, that is already the behaviour I currently see using the Bezel interface with QS 1.0. QS remembered the preference I selected across a relaunch, too.

Same here (with Nostromo).

It will once you switch to “Filter Results” once. But I think a clean new install defaults to “Snap to Best”.

So what's the current behavior?

There's a preference for the behavior for when you right arrow into something. It defaults to Snap to Best but you can change it to either of Filter choices, and it remembers your setting between restarts. Seems like a normal setting, or am I missing something that makes it more complicated (which I think I am).

I believe that’s an accurate description.

I’ve looked at the code just now. There is no default in the `QSDefaults.plist` for this setting, but there is C code that makes it default to “Snap to Best”. I think all defaults should be defined in the plist personally, and I think “Filter Results” makes more sense as a default. I’ll try to change that later today, but that obviously won’t appear until the next release, so I’d document it as is.

I don’t have time to test by wiping my settings right now, but I’m guessing this setting also comes into play when using the Search Contents and (possibly) Show Contents actions. But other than that, I don’t think there’s more to it.
