Issue 67: Highscore Update Crash 1.2.0
http://code.google.com/p/quadra/issues/detail?id=67

New issue report by theentit...@netscape.net:
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. updating highscore list quadra crashes
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expect to see updated version of highscores, instead quadra crashes and
turns multiple colors before shutting out entirely

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.2.0 / 1.1.8
windows xp

Please provide any additional information below.

this only occured with version 1.2.0 when i brought the new file from
1.1.8 into the folder to upload my level 52 game because it would crash
everytime using 1.1.8 to update. but now i have deleted the file out of
the folder and it still keeps crashing when updating.

Maybe a highscore list by version could be made available using 1.2.0 or
later versions, this could bring some new light to players playing single
player games again. You also made available a 5 minute sprint version,
there should be a highscore list for that?
Lets make that happen ? :D

Issue 67: Highscore Update Crash 1.2.0

Comment #1 by pphaneuf:
I found the bug yesterday, a bit late, I think I managed to fix it in
r532. I'll see
about getting another release candidate out, and you can try that out.

Folks,

I only recently discovered Quadra (about a week ago) and just
discovered that the online highscore updating is crashing as well on
my PC. I don't think that the cause is from new code in v1.2, as I am
running v1.1.8 (2001) and the crash occurs with that release version.

When I first updated the highscore list (about a week ago, shortly
after installing the game), there were no problems at all (the update
download 5 REC files, and the highscores where then displayed within
the game). Currently, the update gets to about 112kb, and then CTD.

Anyhow more details, running Quadra v1.1.8 under Windows 98SE. The
crash is simply a CTD, no error messages or other Windows lockups,
etc...

P.S. THANKS for a GREAT game! :)

Folks,

Any idea of what would cause the crash in version 1.1.8 (the game
still crashes when I try to update the world highscores list)?

BTW, the last time I was able to actually retrieve the highscores list
(per my previous message post, several weeks ago when I first
installed Quadra) there were five entries contained in the list within
the game:

1 - RZ***Stephen 2951441 733 49 1969-12-31 19:00:00
2 - *$@w*Arjen 2739948 663 45 1969-12-31 19:00:00
3 - VicIonCic 2652692 655 44 1969-12-31 19:00:00
4 - kdjoony 2604849 626 42 1969-12-31 19:00:00
5 - *$@w*Arjen 2505669 616 42 1969-12-31 19:00:00

Currently, there is a new entry (#2 below) that I saw over at the
highscores web page at http://ludusdesign.com/cgi-bin/qserv.pl?data=gethighscoreshtml%0anum%20100
:

1 RZ***Stephen 2951441 733 49 1969-12-31 19:00:00
2 RZ***Stephen 2801703 772 52 1969-12-31 19:00:00
3 *$@w*Arjen 2739948 663 45 1969-12-31 19:00:00
4 VicIonCic 2652692 655 44 1969-12-31 19:00:00
5 kdjoony 2604849 626 42 1969-12-31 19:00:00
6 *$@w*Arjen 2505669 616 42 1969-12-31 19:00:00

I don't know if it's related, but the only difference from when I
successfully updated the scores a few weeks ago until now when the
game crashes is entry #2 above (according to the highscores web page
at http://ludusdesign.com/cgi-bin/qserv.pl?data=gethighscoreshtml%0anum%20100
).

Yes! We do! It was actually fixed in r532
(http://code.google.com/p/quadra/source/detail?r=532), which is
unfortunately after the revision from which the 1.2.0rc4 has been
built. You guys are just too good, you were making recordings that
were too big for some static buffer. :-P

The good news is that tomorrow, Stéphane and Rémi should be showing up
at my place, and while we would like to nail issue #66
(http://code.google.com/p/quadra/issues/detail?id=66), at the very
least we should be able to make a new release candidate with the fix
needed to update the highscores. With any luck, we'll fix the Vista
crash too, and it very well might be the last release candidate for
the stable release (of course, you guys could prove us wrong by
finding yet another killer bug?)...

Sorry for taking such a long time in replying, but even though I gave
you some information in the other reply (oh, and the bug was indeed
very old, nothing that was specific to 1.2), I was wondering what
version of 1.2 you found this with?

I just want to confirm that you're not using the version I think is
fixed in (which would mean it's not really fixed!).

Oh, and I'm not 100% sure, Stéphane or Rémi might be able to confirm
this, but I think Win98 might not be supported anymore? Although if
you tried the 1.2 version already, I might be wrong (I have very
little to do with Windows, my thing is more Linux and Mac OS X)!

Have fun!

I'm not running version 1.2, bu rather the last regular release
version 1.1.8 (circa 2001). I understand what you meant in your
previous reply though, the replay(s) (probably #2 in the list that I
mentioned previously) is too big for the buffer. Hehe, as far as
"good" players, I'm not one of them... my replays are probably only
about 15kb or so LOL!

Sounds like you probably fixed it :) (being them I'm still running
the old version 1.1.8)

*PLEASE* *PLEASE* don't say that Windows 98 SE won't be supported in
the new final release :( I'm still running Windows 98 SE (see my
messages about "Wadder.exe" here in the forums), and don't have any
plans to upgrade to Windows XP anytime in the future (my computers are
way too slow LOL)

Yeah, but the recordings that your Quadra is receiving from the server
are pretty big. Since I was using one of those problematic recording
for debugging, when I fixed it, it got on the server, and now it's
makes it that nobody (without the very newest version) can update
their highscores... I've got an idea, I'll fix this at some point,
sorry!

Hmm, since you couldn't run the recently build wadder.exe, that
doesn't sound too good for you... It'll be 10 years since Win98 was
released in a few days (in fact, it predates even the first version of
Quadra by almost a year), we can only support old platforms for so
long!

Maybe this would be a good time to switch to Linux? I've got Ubuntu on
a pretty old machine here, works pretty well... ;-)

I'm not too savy on all of this programming-type stuff, but isn't it
simply a matter of compiling the source using a compiler that supports
Windows 98? Is there any special code withim the Quadra source that
_absolutely_ requires Windows XP?

I'm not sure of the new features that have been added to the new
version 1.2 of Quadra, but by most of the messages that I've read here
the minimum system requirements aren't much higher than the old
version 1.1.8 of the game.

If I'm not mistaken, that would mean that version 1.2 of Quadra could
run quite smoothly on something like a P200... seems a shame that a
game with such low minimum system requirements would require Windows
XP to run (especially since Windows XP on a P200 would be slower than
mollases in the winter <G>).

I have to admit not being too savvy on the Windows black magic,
myself. I'll ask Stéphane today.

It seems to be a building issue. Stéphane is presently installing a
Windows 2000 in a virtual machine to install the older version of
Visual Studio that should be able to make a compatible executable.

It was also pointed that it probably "only" requires Windows 2000.

Which, uh, version of Internet Explorer do you have? It might seem
weird, but it's possible that you need to have IE6, for some reason.

That would be SUPER! :) Many thanks! :) When he compiles the new
version, if you would be so kind as to upload it, I'll download it and
give it a test for you folks :)

Yes, I have MSIE v6.0 installed on both of my W98SE computers.

P.S. If possible, could you ask Stéphane to compile a Wadder
executable using the older version of Visual Studio?

P.P.S. Thanks in advance for all of the above... I'm really looking
forward to the new version :
