In 1977, I went to Quebec City to study at Laval University and in 1980 participated in the referendum on Sovereignty/Association with other students, in a registered extra-curricular activity. After the referendum was over, many of the women and gays in Quebec City stuck something into my head that they initially called, “The Thief” and then they started to refer to me as, “The Camera”.
A considerable number of Francophones complained openly in public about treating a student like that. Those who stuck it into my head first said, “We want to show everybody the filthy, rotten reprobate that came into Quebec from Ontario to defend the “NO” during the referendum." Afterwards they said that they wanted to use “The Camera” to find Trudeau’s secret homosexual network in Quebec City.
Since 1980, whenever I travel in the US there are always a few people who heckle me in public with, “Hey Periscope!” or “Up Periscope!”. USA Today has published articles about “The Periscope from Up North” or “Up Periscope!”
One evening I was taking a plane from LA to Salt Lake City, when an argument broke out between a man and women several seats behind me. He didn’t want her going into my head on the plane and then talking to him about what she was finding.
A Flight Attendant came to see what was going on between the couple. The man said that he objected to having to travel on the same plane as the “Periscope from Up North!”
The Flight Attendant told him that if he didn’t stop immediately, she would radio ahead and have an Air Marshall arrest him when he got off the plane.
