Frequently I hear people say, “Every time I see Justin Trudeau he makes me think of his father! He’s like a link to the past.” Justin is not the only Canadian politician who or was is a physical mnemonic for someone who lived in the past. Joe Clark was also bless or plagued with this same attribute.
As a student at the U of Alberta, Joe formed a special relationship with John Diefenbaker and became the Prime Minister’s personal research assistant. After graduating, Joe was employed by the PCP and a deep bond grew between him and John. Joe became associated with the Chief inside the Party and it helped his political career immensely.
I recall sitting on an Air Canada jet in 1976 bound for Montreal’s Mirabel Airport, after back-packing around France. The woman in the seat beside me had tinted her hair angel blue and was from Montreal. She asked me if I had heard the good news and I asked her, which news was that.
She replied, “Oh, I’m so happy. Mr. Joseph Clark has been elected the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. Every time I see him, he makes me think of John Diefenbaker.”
After that, I became more observant and noticed hundreds of people and the media remark how much Joe made them think of the Chief. It even helped him become leader of the Opposition.
