Hey everyone,

the last Thursday of this month is coming nearer with big steps.
Unfortunately I am not in Singapore (I'm in Germany for a while) but I just wanted to remind you :)

Would anyone like to have another User Group Meeting? I think Benjamin already suggested to sponsor the event at hackerspace.sg again, so that would be a possible venue for the event.
Would anyone want to hold a small talk?

I think it would be a cool idea to invite some girls from the ladypy event to the User Group? It would show that hacking can even be social :) Maybe some of the ladies can share their first experiences with python and the ladypy event in general. It's always good to observe new users. It should remind us how we started and struggled ourselves years ago.

Also Calvin could share his long term vision for the user group. I bet it will break lose a lively discussion.

Does anyone know if it is time again for the quarterly meetup at SMU?

Cheers,
Martin

P.S.: Also sending this to the Facebook group.

Maybe Calvin can mention about it on ladypy this Saturday?

Hallo Martin, Victor and all,

Yes. Will do that. Will let the ladies know and encourage them to participate in these user group meet-ups!

There are two upcoming Python meet-ups - the Monthly one (25th Aug, probably at Hackspace.sg?) as well as the Quarterly one (tentatively set at 15th Sep, probably at SMU as usual).

So mark your calendars! Exciting times ahead for Pythonistas in Singapore...

Those who would like to prepare something for the 15th Sep session, please email directly to bengkeatliew at gmail dot com so he can schedule the talks.
And who coordinates the monthly session's talks usually? Martin? Or is it informal/decided on-the-spot?

Cheers!

Hi Calvin,

that's awesome. So if the there is a SMU event coming up on September 15th we probably don't need any talks for August 25th. I think it should be a social meetup. I am in Germany and won't be able to attend those events but I can see how I can help to organize a social meetup from here...

Cheers,
Martin

P.S.: How did you find out about the SMU event? That information did not reach me at all... :(

Chow,

good point! I think as soon as we have finished the python.sg redesign, setting up and embedding a Google Calendar dedicated to the local Python community will be one of our next steps.

For now I have created an event at Facebook:

For those not using Facebook:
**** snip ****
It is the last Thursday of the month again. We could have a social meetup again. As there will be an event at SMU on September 15th we probably don't need to have any talks at hackerspace.sg this time. If you have a talk, you should hold it on September 15th.

However a social meetup could be a great opportunity to invite some of the ladies taking part in the pyladies workshops. They could share their first experiences with Python and it's community and meet some more Python veterans.

I think before we should find a location, we should find out how many people would like to have a social meetup, since the SMU event will be shortly after. Please vote by Attending or Not Attending to this RSVP. Thanks!
**** snap ****

If you are not using Facebook and you would like to have a beer with fellow Pythonists on August 25th, please raise your hand in this thread ;)

Cheers,
Martin

Calvin, do you know about the #python-sg IRC channel that was setup after the last PyCon (seeing as it is not linked on the group info)?

We are at #python-sg on freenode.net! Can you add in this info for this Google group?

If ladypy participants wish to get help they can find us there as well.

For all who do not keeping track of the meetup details on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=178604555545143), my apologies for not updating here.

The monthly meetup is Tomorrow, August 25th 7.30pm at HackerspaceSG (http://hackerspace.sg/).

Currently, Calvin will most probably be having a Python Hack-along session where beginners and experienced developers can code stuff together and learn new stuff as well.

What we need now: Hackerspace member to host us.

If you are attending and not using Facebook, please reply here.

Thank you!

You guys think there's a need to setup a G+ group for the meetup group we have? Just thinking out loud.

I think we already have too many groups :)
Did you know that there seems to be a group on meetup.com as well that is currently dying because the main organizer wants to step back? "Those" guys seem to know nothing about "us" at all o_O

Since when does G+ has groups? Never saw that feature, yet...??

M

Hi

"Did you know that there seems to be a group on meetup.com as well

I'm one of "those" guys (The Other Guys!). While I've been hacking in
Python for a few years now I hadn't joined any groups. So when I
searched I found the other site. Let me know if you don't think this
is a good idea, but I'm going to redirect everyone here and then shut
the other site down. That way we will have critical mass in one
place.

Regards...Scott

I actually like meetup.com .. it is an awesome way to discover interesting things when you are in a new city.
We should discuss if we can use it as another way to raise awareness.

I have no problem with using many different networks (we have google groups, facebook, twitter) as long as all of them are listed on python.org (yes, yes I know, we need to hurry up redesigning it *g). But we should make sure that a group of active members has admin rights on all of those so that all of the networks can be in sync.

Cheers,
Martin
